Cheap, mid-sized tellies?

Posted by: Top Cat on 13 October 2004

Hi folks.

We're looking for recommendations for a reasonably inexpensive, mid-sized TV which doesn't look too ugly and which isn't too deep.

I'd prefer the picture quality to be decent, but I'm not so fussed as to whether it's widescreen or not; it'll be a stand-in TV until such time as LCD TVs (or whatever comes along to replace them) drop down to sensible money. Dual SCART would be nice, as would Nicam Stereo.

I'm looking for something in the 21"->25" size bracket, and the budget is £400. Nothing smaller than 21" (viewing distance in our new room is approx. 15' from the TV) and nothing too big (width isn't really the issue so much as depth, said the vicar to the nurse...)

Any recommendations? Anything which will provide a reasonably decent picture and last around 3 years or so would be ideal. In fact, something which is likely to die in around 3 years would be perfect, as otherwise there is always the small possibility that the Mrs will roll out the "But what we have is still working" argument against the future flat TV... Roll Eyes )

Ta,

John

PS. High street/supermarket or mail order - so long as they deliver, will be fine.

PS. This is one possibility I've found which looks like a good deal - perfect size, not silver (important: she hates silver TVs) and free delivery. But is is any good, does anyone know?

Sorry TC, can't really make a rec but I'd have thought you'd gave no problems finding a half decent 25" 4:3 for that. It's the widescreen /flat that makes them expensive.

Have you tried any of the What TV type websites?

Argos are currently selling in their sale a Panasonic widescreen 28" flat screen for £349, which is a bargain. Panasonic do a 24" version which my mother bought in the summer for about a tenner less than that.
Stonking quality and at the price, pretty much unbeatable. I was toying with getting the 28" version myself.
But it's silver.
But most are!
JVC do a black one, but it isn't a flat screen and it isn't as good by miles.

How bad are the motion artefacts on that 100Hz Panny?

I'm sensitive to flicker >80Hz (a byproduct of my nystagmus), but can't get past the 100Hz digital nasties on most of the sets I've seen...

I'm in the market for a black widescreen as well - how do the current Toshibas stack up? They all have comb filters AFAIK (a definite necessity for PS1/Laserdisc/VHS inputs...)
