Jolie Holland’s "Escondida"
Posted by: Dan M on 28 July 2004
Jolie Holland was in town last week, but of course I failed to make the effort to attend her show. I've listened to the live stream of her previous album at
http://www.jolieholland.com/sounds.html, and I'm intrigued enough to add Escondida to my next insound order. So, before I do, has anyone got it, and if so whatcha think?
cheers,
Dan

Dan.
Just trawling back through the music room posts as I have not been here for a while. Noted nobody answered this. If you have not bought this already I would thoroughly recommend it. Make sure you give it repeated listenings and make them late at night. Her music reveals its gems in an unhurried manner and you should be in no hurry yourself when listening to reap the rewards.
Her previous album Catalpa is also full of understated little wonders. It is a very simple low budget recording but produces an atmosphere that is very intimate.
Cheers

Very well put, Norman, I couldn't agree more. "Escondida" is one of the few non-Jazz, non-classical CD's I've bought in the last 9 months, and it's one of my dearest.
Best regards, freundliche Grüße
Stefan

Stefan,
I have also been predominantly purchasing classical and jazz recordings for some time and Jolie Holland has also been one of the few variations from that pattern and a most worthwhile variation it was. Given the synergy in our recent musical purchases I would suggest you may also get great pleasure from the first Pieta Brown album (self titled)if you have not already done so. In my view a very subtle album that rewards repeated listening.
Cheers

Norman and Stefan,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. After listening to the 'Catalpa' audio stream several times, I purchased the CD at my local shop (they had sold out of 'Escondida') and I'm still enjoying it -- it's also good on a lazy afternoon. There are some little gems on that CD, and I look forward to getting the new one.
cheers,
Dan
