Bulldog broadband..
Posted by: Steveandkate on 24 November 2004
My mum is thinking of ditching her dial-up and going for broadband - yesterday a salesman came round trying to sell her Bulldog - anyone know anything about if it is a good service - by cancelling her BT phoneline, she can save on line rental and most phone calls, so it will cost less than she pays BT per month..
Any experience with it anyone ?
Cheers,
Steve

My brother uses Bulldog. He lives in Silvertown, has no problems and recommends them. I have heard of complaints about them, but I think every isp has them.
By the way, he has the 512k service peak, 4MB off peak. Never had a problem.

Bulldog have a bad rep on ADSLGuide. I don't know why. I've no experience with them, but I'd be *VERY* wary of anything that is sold by door-door salesmen.
I use Pipex (512/50/UL) and it's fine and reliable. I intend to swap to PlusNet (2048/50/1Gig Limited) when my year is up next month.
One question: not knowing much about Bulldog, if they are an ADSL provider, then your mother will probably still need to maintain her BT account as most ADSL providers basically resell variants on the BT Broadband service.

Ditto what John said about their reputation adslguide.
What sort of figures have they quoted? ADSL can be had very cheaply these days.

John,
I think Bulldog are a Local Loop Unbundling service, so they take over the line from BT completely. Bulldog will have their own telephone & ADSL equipment in the exchange.
Sounds like it could be a real hassle to switch back to BT if she doesn't like it.
cheers, Martin

Steve , i'm an ex Pipex subscriber.
nothing wrong with their connection, but i asked them if they were going to "modernise" their price plans in line with recent alternative isp's offers..the short answer was No.
having looked around the excellent ADSL Guide i contacted XIFOS who are offering 1mb connection with no download limits for £26 per month.
this is a relatively new company and there has been a few hiccups since i joined them, mainly speed issues.
these have now been resolved and i'm very happy with their service.
a fresh change from Pipex whose customer relations dept was non existent.

OK, I gather that Bulldog are offering a 4mb service for £40 a month - including free local phone calls etc. this will enable my mother to cancel her bt landline, so no line rental or call charges. As she is currently paying aol £17 per month, the savings will equal the bulldog charges, and give her calls and broadband on top !
Also, the 'salemen' were actually just posting leaflets but also offering some advice, and not actually selling.
She has no real need for the speed, but it does sound interesting....
