VPN through XP Firewall ?

I've just come home to find that the PC's in my office have installed SP2. Not quite on their own but I won't bore you with the details.
I have a bunch of XP VPN connections permanently open to customer's systems. These no longer work with the XP firewall enabled, so I have to disable it and then the incessant nagging about not being protected starts up.
I don't want to install Zone Alarm etc. My router only does basic NAT, but together with XP firewall this has managed to keep me clean.
I don't know much about how XP VPN actually works. Does it operate on a static TCP or UDP port (or ports) or is it more complicated than that ?
