Running out of webspace
Posted by: garyi on 18 August 2004
According to Adam, the naim forum is nearing its webspace limit. I vote that we all hit it bloody hard in the next few days, hopefully they will buckle and get some decent forum software.
Harrah!

And here's me thinking that my CD's and LP's were the only thing to be going round and round.........
We were trying really hard to prevent it going round and round if the truth be told

Hi Adam,
Locking that thread does seem odd. How on earth can a thread with a few hundred lines of ascii compare with just one jpeg uploaded to the naim photo album thread? My guess is that the thread would have tapped out at around 7000 posts anyway .

The problem is infopop, I use a couple of forums that are hosted by them, and the search is often broken, the site is often just plain not there, with a variety of maintenence and unavailable errors.. other than taking it in-house, which I don't know if Naim have the technical knowledge or inclination to do, who or where would you suggest Naim go to?

Very suspicious indeed. It's like the name of the former member from Wales was mentioned too often - for strictly prosodic reasons.

I use phpBB forum software; with a few hacks, it's way nicer than infopop.
If you can work out how to register on a forum, with ControlPanel you are skilled enough to install and run a forum. How do Infopop manage to make money? Are they really cheap, or what?

"How do Infopop manage to make money? Are they really cheap, or what?"
Precisesly the opposite I think you'll find. My impression is that they are a rare example of being successful despite (or maybe because?) of being both expensive and crap.

VBulletin is used by the other fora round here including Pink Fish and Zerogain.
Tony L switched to VB because it's as cheap as chips.
Personally I prefer linear threading. The old forum was great for 90s computer nerds.
Using [ Quote ] [ /Quote ], copy and paste works for me for specific replies to someone further back in the thread.

Steve.

Also used by AudioKarma. Seems to work quite well.

I suspect Infopop offer a complete managed solution that includes everything from configuration/branding to installation/upgrades and support and includes the (not inconsiderable) hosting.
Sites like PinkFish and ZeroGain using vBulletin just buy the software for $100 and then do it themselves with some cheap DIY hosting -- an option probably not appropriate for Naim for a number of reasons and likely to cost nearly as much anyway in a commercial environment.
Personally I think the software is ok (esp. on the old UI which is better then the new one) and have yet to see much from vBulletin that would make me go to the bother of changing.
More of a problem IMHO is the fact that it's gone very slow and the Search and "View New Posts" have not been working reliably for ages. I have to go and find the new messages (a fact made near impossible when the top 15 threads in the Padded Cell have all been updated by a certain German based member half an hour ago) which makes me use it far less.
FWIW I don't want to complain which would be rather churlish -- it's free after all -- but as this has been going on for some time I wonder why Naim aren't waving SLAs in Infopop's face and refusing to pay the no doubt significant monthly invoices. Which of course they might be.

That sounds like you mean it Adam!
I don't use any other forum and so when I have looked at Pink Fish or Mana, I don't know how to navigate properly. I do acknowledge that this forum looks like no other I have seen.
This sounds exciting.
What is Linear Threading?
Posted on: 19 August 2004 by Martin Clark
Linear threading - looks like this forum, and most others. Comments arrayed in chronological order, no ability to reply to specific posts.
In contrast, the old Naim forum used to look like this. It tended to lead to fewer threads and wonderfully-nerdy digressions.

If you are looking for a new host find my hosting has alot of reviews. If you are planning to DiY, the CPanel interface that my host uses is great for non-geeks. The Fantastico installer is brilliant; one click installer for Invision, phpBB2, or YaBBSE, and the site backup/restore is just as easy. Loads of hosts use the same setup, just find one that fits your needs. www.hasweb.com looks like it has some good deals, but I am sure there are people here who've got experience of equally good deals. My host is great, but won't do 'corporates'.

I'm a member of the Pink Fish forum but don't use it much. I find the Naim forum much easier to follow and navigate around in and whilst it might not be that sophisticated in the eyes of more experienced forum users here, it's good enough for me.

I was happy with the old forum and I'm happy with the new forum. Search function apart, for me at least, it's fast, reliable and even smells good.
The biggest problem are the contributors....

Yeah, but with phpBB, you can click ignore, and filter out a member's contributions. Perfect for never having to read threads by characters who are inexplicably tolerated by moderators.

Then you end up with a very disjointed thread where you see people's reactions to the person you have filtered out. Far better just to skip past posts you don't wish to read.

Steve.

Martin,
I hope I have just successfully demonstrated that this is simply untrue!
Anyway, this is reverse chronological order (wrt the threading at least although not the posting on each thread.)

Steve.
