Caps Lock.....why?

Posted by: Shayman on 14 January 2005

What's the point of the Caps Lock on a computer keyboard. Its huge for God's sake and I have honestly never used it! At least twice a day I'm typing away and when I look up eVERYTHING lOOKS lIKE tHIS.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhhh!!! Mad Mad Mad

Surely now typewriters are defunct theres no need to have the Caps Lock so big and right there next to the SHIFT key.

Friday rant over.

i AGREE. iT'S A REAL PAIN SOMETIMES.

Perhaps a bright flashing led on the keyboard whenever the Capslock is on would help.

I find I hit it most when trying to find the tab key or 'A' SEE WHat i meAN!

Its of no value at all. Decent editors allow you to change case of text easily so its not needed.

Also, why the hell do we still have to use the qwerty keyboard? That was designed to SLOW DOWN typists so that the typewriter keys didn't keep on getting stuck.

If you've ever watched a trained typist you wonder how quick they would have been if using a decent efficient layout.

There is one use : when you have to mix capital letters and figures, like in a mac address for instance.

But that's it, indeed.

Keyboards are accumulators of the needs of history - at one time all work on a keyboard when connected to a main frame or when punching cards for input was in caps so if you were connected via PC a CAPS lock would have been beneficial

Moving from a QUERTY or a QWERTZ or AZERTY to an
efficient key layout
eg the DVORAK Layout
would be of a similar magnitude to getting the UK to drive on the right hand side of the road.

Transferring between keyboards is a challenge - especially if the keyboard has been mapped to the key tops - letters are not where you expect them to be, in some keyboards the top row reacts differently to the shift key.

The challenge of changing keyboard layout between cyber cafes other peoples desks etc would kill productivity for quite a while.

At last, and after years of thinking I was the only one, a group of like minded people.

I have even written to Dell asking them to remove the bloody things off their keyboards....

Come on, encourage your spouses, co workers, friends, etc etc to write and complain.

AlternATIVELY, WE COULD ALL LEARN TO TYPE PROPERLY AND STOP COMPLAINING. yOU COULD ALSO, AGHHHHHHHHH....................

In my experience data entry people use caps lock all the time. Those in my place of work do anyway as much of our data is held that way for historical reasons.
