Madogga lip-synch controversy
Posted by: The mole man on 04 October 2004
Just heard Sir Elton John ranting about Madogga supposedly lip-synching at her recent live shows. Something about expecting to hear someone actually singing for £75 a ticket. What do forum members make of this outburst?

I thought the tickets were over a £100!
Wouldn't want it to sound "bad" would you.
"Some of the people all of the time.....etc."
Tom, debateable.

Years ago I interviewed A Certain Ratio (excellent band from Manchester). During a US jaunt in 1982 (or 83, I can't remember) they were supported by a then-unknown singer/dancer called Madonna. According to ACR's Martin Moscrop, she was lip-synching even then, and, as far as I'm aware, she has done ever since. I'm 99% sure she was when I saw her in 1990.
I don't think many people go to see the old bag in concert to hear her sing - they go for the spectacle.
I haven't got a problem with it particularly. I mean, I went to see the Floyd doing The Wall at Earls Court in 1980/1981 and half of that was precisely synchronised to tapes and effects. Dave Gilmour used to complain that although it was fun to do, there was no space for hhim to blow out, except when he came up on top of the wall to do his solo at the end of Comfy Numb; the show was rehearsed down to the last millisecond to allow for all tthe effects, tapes and the building of the wall itself. The Floyd used to be an improvising band, and nobody complained about the group not stretching out, they just enjoyed the spectacle and something which was – and I'm no fan of The Wall album – an intriguing an innovative 3-D performance.

Exactly. If I had to shell out that kind of money to go to a Madonna concert, I'd pay a bit extra if she'd lip-synch it.

Last week I saw "Pink Fraud", who did a fantastic job of recreating some classic Pink Floyd stuff - eg the whole of Money.
Definately no lip-syncing.
£11.00.
A bargain.
cheers, Martin

The Enid sounded bloody good from what I remember.
Floyds music is "slightly" more complicated than a solo performer even one as "great" as maddog.
Going to see Think Floyd on Thursday £14.50.

They go to look at her knickers, and always have done.

Madonna's knickers: what an absolutely revolting thought.

"I saw them a Stonehenge 1984 for free. My memory of the event is hazy"
There is a video of that gig -- in fact my Dad worked on it. It also features Roy Harper and Hawkwind.

Tom,
You just have to look harder nowadays. Try Super Furry Animals outdoors anywhere! You won't need drugs or alcohol but...
Mike
PS: Recently saw Madge at the MEN. Anyone going for the spectacle who was impressed must have very low expectations. What is so spectacular or innovative about (essentially) building a theatre in an arena? I also had a clear impression of lip synching but could have (almost) forgiven that were the selection of songs any good. The show sagged in the middle very badly; the kaballah mixed with catholicism left many most uncomfortable; and I left with the overall impression of an artist (much like the Stones last year) with no remaining sense of the dynamics required to make a good set.
You know you've seen something underwhelming when even the middle aged gay cowboys sit down for the whole set!!!

Tom - I saw Ozric Tentacles not so very long ago in the open air, and if anything came close to the perfect vivid green grass & blue sky thing - for free - this was it.
It still exists, but we are not (I presume here) in the circle of knowing what is on where and when, as we were when we were students.
( Just looked at that last sentence. what, where, when, were, when. were....oh dear!)

...certainly seemed a bit strange when I saw them at Glastonbury last year... I still swear there was Pink Floyd's pink pig over the Pyramid Stage towards the end of the gig (bear in mind I'm partially sighted); other people also saw some kind of pink cloud or something similar towards the end of the SFAs, so how was that done???
Blinding live show though!
That 1984 gig sounds awesome though - and to think it would be less than a year to the Battle of the Beanfield... Grrr....

Dom,
I too am partially-sighted but it was indeed a pig!!!
Over the years I have come to believe that being partially-sighted only ever enhances the gig experience!!!

I've never understood how M*****a can be so big, she:
- Doesn't sing particulary good.
- Not particulary good at writing songs.
- Not very good at acting.
- Her looks is, at the best of times, plain.
So why?

Enid- amazing, haven't thought about them since I saw them in Farnborough in 1978!! I remember them playing forever and putting on an amazing show. You're right, it doesn't happen any more, you can either have the relatively cosy pub/club gig or the exagerated big anonymous show (assuming it's pretty much the same in the UK as the US). The Stonehenge spirit does live on though - I saw Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, Nick Lowe, Steve Earle and lots of others for free at the weekend in San Francisco. Pretty nice vibe over the two days.

She captures the zeitgeist.
She reinvents herself.
Repeat.
Not really my bag, baby, but you can't say she's not talented. Gives the public what they want.

*Saw The Enid late 70s/early 80s @ Digbeth Civic Hall (as it was then). POMPTASTIC !
I think shortly after they "ran into a little bit of trouble...."

That Enid DVD was made by a mate of my Dad's called John Bentham. My Dad may well have edited it or at least provided the edit suite.

We saw Enid during Easy Pieces tour can't remember the name of the venue though.(edit Finbury Park?)(Edit2 Rainbow theatre) Northish London looked like an old cinema and had Arabian scenes around the stage and circle.
Excellent gig during the finale the roadies dismantled the stage set until it looked like an OGWT gig. I had never heard of them and went with a mate from work (an avid fan). One of lifes more pleasant surprises. (One of the shit ones was Deep Purple at Wembley in GNW).
