Display off

Posted by: Engers on 28 April 2004

I have a new CD5i and Nait 5i. I have heard that there is an improvement in sound quality to be gained by switching the displays of both the amp and CD player off. It may be my ears but there appears to be absolutely no audible difference between display on and off.

Has anyone got any firm views on this?

With the CDX I preferred the sound with the display ON...

I confess I've never been able to detect any difference either on my CDX2 or 282.

I think someone is having a laugh here.

This so called improvement is one of these that can be detected by highly sensitive measuring equipment but the human ear cannot hear it.

A bit like covering the top of a CDS3 when the sun is out! I'll bet there are a few peole out there that have tried it!

This may be a stoopid question, but how does one turn off the display of a Nait5i? I mean, what turns off (the logo light? The source select buttons? The LED on the volume knob?)

I can see the logic in this far more than some of the 'tweeks' posted here.

If in geek mode the CD5 does sound better with display off, but life's to short!

I think there is an improvement in sound quality with the sound off!!

I don't really. But I leave my system powered on all the time, so turn the display off because I am worried that the LCD will burn out if I dont. I still get concerned that the light bulbs will blow costing a fortune to sort out. (I have CD5i and NAIT5i also)

Is it really normal to leave them powered on all the time, and do the bulbs last - as the green illumination looks the business.

I have a CDX and used to have a CD3.5 cannot tell the difference with display on/off! Smile

Personally I leave the display off though I haven't noticed any difference, I just prefer the look of everything with just the Naim logo showing Big Grin

Yes, a noticable, though not huge, difference with the display off with my CDS2.

I'm just feeling that way. I don't know why.

Who cares if it makes a difference to the sound, certainly looks cool.

Mine sounds worse with the display off because the kids come up and say "what number is it on, daddy?", and so interrupt my listening...

Yes, it does sound better; very VERY subtle though. I think it depends on how revealing the rest of your system is...

Those old-skool LED digits though - much MUCH nicer than fluro displays, a'la most DVD players, Sony products, Pioneer PDR609 etc etc...

Shame though that Naim DON'T offer a "logo off" mode, so you can put your system into "don't burgle me" mode when you go out...

BTW - my NAIT3 is 8 years old and the display bulbs (LEDs??) on that are fine, so they do last.

Hi,Alex,

Can't tell the difference with my not-very-revealing CDS2/XPS2/52/252mk2/MFS's.

A tip, have you tried the display on/off test, without the baby monitor on the same ring mains, as your hi-fi . It could make that 0.00001 % difference we all crave !!

P.S Thanks for Saturday, you really made the earth move for me, er, hi-fi wise that is !

Best wishes,

Rod

I can just hear a slight improvement with all 3 displays off (Pre, CDP and tuner)

I suspect I would hear a significant improvement if it weren't for the rustle of the carpet as I get up to wander closer to my ES11s to check the magnitude of the difference Big Grin.

I am also upset that the buttons on the remote control seem to interfere with this piece of acute testing Big Grin!!! Anyone got any tips on silencing them??? Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
