Is A Woman

Do you know it just occurred to me as I sit here with Lambchop playing that there might be just one person who reads this that doesn't have this album.

In which case I have just made your day.

I have no Lambchop either, though it's been on my short list for a while. I'll look for it when I'm in "The City" this weekend.

Best enjoyed with mint sauce, yes?

As a grouchy old sod, I prefer the earlier records (What Another Man Spills etc). Is A Woman is very pretty though.

So what about the double that came out recently(ok, so they say it was 2 single albums) - Aw c'mon and No, you c'mon or whatever they were called - I love Is a woman and Nixon, but have not been hit by these - they just seem shallow and do not hold my attention - is it worth putting in more effort ?
Am I shallow ?

Well, first listen. Very different to what I normally like. My wife Jane came in and said “who’s this” having put the first track on tonight - played the whole thing to the end. Very sublime sounding and very interesting chord changes, I like that. I'll give it a few days and report again.
Thanks

I hate to tell you this Steve but I think you might be shallow Wink

Seriously give them a go, they are growers if you're a newbie. The latest double is very good as well.

I have "Nixon" and "What another man spills" but as yet I don't have "Is a woman".

I think this may be a tad more on the piano/romantic side from what I've heard? Might give it a try If I stumble across it.

Can anyone elaborate on how it compares to Nixon/spills?

Is A Woman has failed to grip me, it's just a bit dull really.

I got a bit bored with Lambchop in general after buying most of their output. To cap it all I saw them live this year and they were mediocre at best. But when I listened to 'Is A Woman' again last week after a long break I still found it rich, subtle and enthralling.

The two new albums feel disposable by comparison, and Nixon is more accesible but not as rewarding. I can see why it splits opinion, but for me IAW would be the only 'essential' Lambchop to own (with 'How I Quit Smoking' in reserve perhaps).

It's worth getting on Vinyl - I got a copy online from HMV and the sound is much richer than my CD version - more so that you'd expect from a vinyl/cd comparison.

I'd add a mention for "How I Quit Smoking", an early 'chop that, for me, ranks with their best. And it has "Theone" on it which is one of the finest love songs you'll ever hear.

Chaps

I bought Is a woman a few months ago and play it quite regular. It is not as good as Sarah Brightman but it is never the less a recommended buy.

Alex G said "Is A Woman is one of the finest records ever made. IMHO."

Mick Pary said "I bought Is a woman a few months ago and play it quite regular. ...a recommended buy."

I find this quite funny in a "Ha ha go Alex! Go Alex!" sort of way. Big Grin

Any clues as to what type of music this is?
Always like to find new music to buy.

Sundance,

It's quirky alt-country. Mellow, with off the wall and frequently funny lyrics.

Like most things in life, it's best enjoyed if you don't allow the hype to raise your expectations too high.

I'm with sideshowbob on this one. What Another Man Spills is the one for me. But I keep posting this on any thread discussing th' chop and I'm sure its getting tedious.

I just don't get it. Bought "Is a woman" and "Nixon" on vinyl and despite repeated attempts, neither has grown on me. I must be missing something. On the other hand, "I see a darkness" by Bonny Prince Billy is a much more compelling listen for me (if a bit on the 'doom and gloom' side).

And for once, my wife agrees wrt. Lamchop - but then again she really can't take the BPB either - says it's too depressing.

If you like that BPB then I think 'Master and Everyone' is even better, and try Iron and Wine 'Our Endless Numbered Days' too.

I struggle with the 'chop. On the one hand people rave about them. On the other hand they are indeed mediocre live and whilst most of the albums are attractive, well played etc. they are also increasingly bland, slight, have nothing to say and less than half a dozen ways to say it sort of records.

The chasm between the sorts of reviews received by say Nixon and the reality of a polite, nicey nice sort of hi-fi buffs record is a yawning one IMHO. I still love Up With People but Is a Woman palls besides Thriller, What Another Man Spills etc... and where the heck did that "alt" bit come from. It couldn't be less "alt" as far as I can see. I mean country and soul - no-ones done that before! Country and jazz? Nope, never heard that either.

C'mon. Na, you c'mon.

Indeed,

Mike
