BERNSTEIN educational programmes on TV

Posted by: uem on 26 April 2004

Hi all

Some (rather long) time ago, the young Leonard BERNSTEIN made some educational programmes on TV, where he gave some insight into classical music and opera; I think the programmes were mainly aimed at children.
Who knows details of these – and: Are these programmes available on DVD or video ?

Thanks for you info & best regards

Urs,

I think they were called 'The Norton Lectures'. No idea if they're available.

Actually, there are two different series of Bernstein lecture/concerts, and you may have merged the two in your memory.

In 1958 he made the Young People's Concerts series, which I remember seeing on TV as a child back then ... a huge influence on a lot of musicians of my age and since. It was released on 10 tapes, is possibly out of print, and I've seen it for prices ranging from US$160 to over US$300.

The link you cited at leonardbernstein.com is for his 1973 lecture series at Harvard, The Unanswered Question - Six Talks at Harvard. This seems to be available on DVD for US$60-100. I haven't seen this series, but now I want to very much. Thanks a lot! Wink

Does anyone remember a West Side Story Documentary Film that showed LB having trouble with Carreras?. I'm not sure if this is available on DVD, but I would like to buy it. It was fasinating to see a great Singer struggling and finally succeeding to deliver the composers audio vision.

Fred,

Thanks for your clarification !

Denis,

I remember having seen this interesting documentary - as I recall, Carreras was "pissed off" with some of the musicians not wanting to complete the set, but stick to the working time contract and go home......so he also storms of stage in anger.....(or something like it...)

Maybe the above link could help you further ?

I found this BBC America link here

The tension between LB & JC was in no small way linked to Carreras discovering he had Luekemia. I now need to figure out where to by the DVD from.
