During a phone call to my 87 year old mother this evening I was astounded to learn that I have relatives in the USA.My dear old dad was always talking about his family.A couple of workmates have had similar experiences.Could I ask the learned members of this forum (and B F) for their views/experiences?

I've got more relatives in the USA than in Scotland although I didn't find out about it as you have. I'd say you should contact them as I have much more in common with my American cousins than my Scottish ones. I've found that when I've met them (every few years) there's been a real closeness that's never been there with the few Scottish relatives I've got.

Find out as much as you can about your family while you can - it might not be of interest now but in a few years when there is no one to ask that is when you get curious
