Joe Pass

Just discovered him, what a colossal talent, just wish I’d come across him sooner. Anybody any recommendations? I’ve only Virtuoso that I downloaded from emusic.com in mp3, but will be on the lookout for “proper” CD stuff ASAP.

Try this:

There are links to album listings and snippets to listen to.
Joe`Pass was certainly a rather unsung Jazz guitarist. greatly respected by fellow players but not as widley known as some.
Meditation is a good album aswell as Virtuoso but you can listen to see if you want to buy.

Maybee 10-11 years ago or so on a trip to Denver with my then wife, I happened to find myself at the house of one of her old highschool friends. Although he was once lead guitar player in a very well received rock band, the chops he played with that band were nothing like the jazz licks he pulled out that night. Samba.Blues. Rags. Everything but the pieces he recorded oh so many years ago. I had to good fortune to plug in one of spare guitars and feebly jam along. His biggest influence (I asked him)...Joe Pass. Turns out he studied under him for quite some time before cultivating an audience of more mass appeal.

I actually bought an Ibanez Joe Pass guitar many moons ago in the mistaken belief that it would somehow imbue me with the spirit of the big man. Naturally it didn't work. It fed back like a bastard through my rock amp, the neck was too skinny for my big hands and I stupidly persisted with the Jazz strings (Flat wounds ?) which made it sound dull and lifeless. Funny that.
So I traded it in for a kick-arse George Benson anniversary model. Beautiful guitar but equally as pointless.
So I traded it in for a Martin J40 which I have just (18 years later) started to fall in love with.
Joe pass was a phenomenal player. I can't think of anyone who could comp like him. I have a "hot licks" video of him trying to explain how he thinks when he is improvising which is scary as hell.
Another thing about Joe is that he was one of the late Emily Remler's mentors. May they both RIP.

Leo Kottke toured with Joe and i think Pepe Romero, he had nothing but praise for him and i think Joe left a lasting impression on Leo as a man and musician.
