Good Old Switzerland's Latest Moral Highground Stance !

Posted by: Berlin Fritz on 28 November 2004

What with Switzerland's recent record on womenn's Democratic rights as well as
other ground breaking Alpine initiatives it's most refreshing to see that
they've also 'voted'for serious stem cell research using foetusses. Irrespective
of what ones views are in respect of the rights and wrongs of this cutting edge
science, and the fact that the rest of the World is still debating the issue, I
can't help but wonder like the British Parliamntary 7 hours taken to decide
action in Iraq, and the 700 Parliamentary hours spent on talking about fox
hunting, that if Switzerloand didn't have a massive pharmaceutical industry
heavily dependent on future breakthroughs ! in this field that still it would
have made the same decision, innit ?

Science, like capitalism and the free market, is unencumbered by moral restraints and values. Eventually that kind of thinking seeps through into democratic decision making.

Sadly true - and I am very astonished by the result of the vote. But do you think, Fritz, that the Swiss (or any other) pharmaceutical industry waited for yesterday's results to start researching on foetuses ? I'm afraid but I believe it is nearly impossible to avoid such practices. And anyway, the Swiss Parliament issued (as they always do) a recommendation to vote 'yes' because the aim of the new law was to regulate an already half-common practice.

That's allright then isn't it ? similarly the new smoking regulataions in UKĀ“pubs will only affect bar personell for instance in places that serve food, those others can get passively smoked upon etc, at the Public & the States pleasure. I think the argument is weak, and spineless, and if complications ensue through lack of proper experimentation and haste, Switzerland will be right up there renouncing it's liability big style, watch this space.

N.B. I'm, glad Britain, Germany, The U.S. REtc don't have massive Pharma industries, as well as large chunks of interests in the Swiss ones, innit ! Maybe Switzerland's being used, ansd can prove the good old victim argument when things get tough ? They will I reckon ?

Good for the Swiss we need the research to be carried out - you may benefit from it one day.

Meanwhile we in the UK will lose all our research activity and consequential manaufacturing activity due to government apathy

Obviously I don't mean this personally Delboy, but unfortunately Adolf would have adored your simple reasoning and logic, on the same note the apathy of ypur own Govewrnment which will implimenmt & lose vital private information about you in the next few years resulting in faceless bills etc, etc, with no legal regress, will no doubt also be ecceptable. I'm well aware of the juggling finaces between Unis, drug firms etc, etc, and Public money, wespecially in Defence matters, Sarin tests for instanceĀ“on British Srervicemen, telling them it was to cure common colds, get a grip mate, remember a certain gentleman who conveniently committed suicide last year, also an ex Chief of Porton Down, innit.
