Nora Jones-spurious noises

Posted by: Wiltshireman on 03 November 2004

Has anyone else experienced problems with Norah Jones’s 'come away with me' album? At first I thought the spurious noises I heard were musicians just being noisy but then I realised that the noises were not repeatable. On the front of the cd case a sticker states that the disc has copy control technology and I presume that it is this that is causing the problem but this in its self is strange because my Meridian 508 24 bit has never failed to play any disc that has been thrown at it even fast burned pc discs have never been a problem.

She's farting gently throughout the recording, a dietary problem apparently.

The SACD multichannel mix has the chuffing coming from behind the listener's right ear, apparently.

The "Interesting Remix"

So while Nora gently strokes the ivory, Steve Davis is playing with his balls........

<shudder>

I think Nora had accidently tucked her skirt into her knickers and was actively fixing the situation, this can sound similar to gentle fart sounds... apparently. Not very professional imo, she should have had this sorted before starting the recording.

Yes, The Wife has this CD, and there are some strange noises, starting at 0:00:00 and ending at 1:14:59.

I don't know what they are?

I was being serious. I read about the farting thing in an interview with her. Honest. Really, I did.

I can't help it...NORAH JONES IS SO BOOOOOOORRRRRIIIINNNNGGG.

Music for people who don't really like music.

Oh dear! I can hear the incoming...

Although "popular" usually corresponds with "bad", I don't think it applies in this case. I, for one, enjoy her music (and it's played by me, not by my wife Roll Eyes).

BTW, I prefer her more recent album to her first.

Steve D - Guilty M'Lud. I unrepentedly do like the Smiths (I must have been dropped on the head as a baby)

Mike - Norah Jones is indelibly linked to an ex so I am biased to dislike her INTENSELY. Please don't let my dodgy taste or bias put you off.

Andy,
It never ceases to amaze me how we can all be so different in our musical likes and dislikes. Of course, the world is a much richer place as a consequence!
Without sounding patronising, you have a very eclectic taste for someone who purports to be 57 years old. John Peel would be very proud!

And wasn't it Peel who said of Lloyd Webber
'He writes songs for people who don't like music.'?

I have noticed a slight edge to her voice on some songs. Almost like slight distortion. I though it might be an instrument or cymbals recorded just below her voice.

My copy was borrowed from the library just to get a taster for what all the fuss was about. My wife likes her voice and her songs. I find Norah innoffensive. Light, pleasant, easy listening. Or gentle mood music for late evening?

I really don't believe one can claim the high intellectual ground with any music.
Just because you like the Bartok String Quartets but dislike Suga Babes doesn't make you more interesting, more intelligent or more trendy. And most certainly doesn't mean you have better taste. It just means you have different taste to someone else.

Ask yourself why an artist is popular. It is because they satisfy more people's musical taste than those artists who don't.
Using this as a weapon to beat them with doesn't make you clever. It just shows limited imagination and a fair degree of snobbery. I've been listening to this artist bashing and "holier than thou in my musical tastes" for over 40 years. It's as bad as picking on someone's appearance, height, hairstyle or dress code.

There are even those who sneer at The Planets, New World Symphony, Trumpet Voluntary, Rachmaninov's Paganini Variations, Toccata and Fugue, etc etc. Simply because they are popular! Why for goodness sake? Who are you to judge what is good or bad music? They seem to have survived rather better than those of your vastly superior good taste! Smile
It's all utterly meaningless really. Tastes change with the wind and with a whim. Tastes change endlessly with time. Even in nude models! Roll Eyes

Though you may be allowed to say: "I don't think much of yours!" It might be better to bite your lip most of the time. I wish I had in the past when tempted to pick on someone's taste. (or lack of it) Now don't even get me started on...... Winker

I've noticed this to. My guess is that it's something done on purpose to make it sound "authentic" (as in let's make it sound like it was recorded in the 1950:s). A very mild processing then, compared to what's usually done to modern popular music.

I should just add that this album was purchased by my wife and not by myself (just incase you all think that I have no musical taste)(must make a mental note to not be around whenever she plays it). It looks as if it's just my cdp that is at fault as it doesn't do it the car. I presume you all use Naim cdp's and they appear to play it/her all right so it looks as if my Meridian has more taste than your Naims, food for thought here lads? Thanks all.

Sorry, my attempt at 'humour' Nime. I agree with your sentiments, its just that the 'flavour' on this forum veers more towards the confrontational than the rational.

Can't agree with you there Nick.

Maybe I should point out that I didn't specifically mean the Music Room.

You surely can't have missed the many threads on driving in the Padded Cell (though I recommend that you do).

I must admit to some habits, but no black and white ones.
