Human League in concert

Just been to see the Human League with Seagull in Reading: a damn fine evening of music. Covered all the hits plus some VERY early stuff - Being Boiled, Empire State Human.... Phil et al actually seemed to be enjoying themselves too.

Worth it - even if you only knw the pop and are not aware how important the band where in the late 70s.

And as for Suzanne Sulley.... Winker

The electro-pop support band (can't remember their name even though the singer said who they were between each song) were clearly a band out of time by about 25 years, I was surprised how dated their music sounded. Also their lab technician look probably won't catch on.

I was never a huge Human League fan. Played one after the other, the hits sounded a bit samey to me. Maybe it was the Balrog bass that overpowered everything else so that any textures were lost in the mix.

Highlight of the evening for me was "1st Man in Space" which wasn't a HL song at all though Phil Oakey did the vocals on the original. I also preferred the early stuff they played (but then I always preferred Travelogue to Dare) when Trinnie and Susanna or whatever they're called were off stage doing a costume change.

Yes I enjoyed it but wasn't blown away, Travelogue may get a spin sometime though I doubt whether Dare will see the light of day again...

The bass was tangible.. Nick Lees would have approved.

I'm tempted to go and see them again, in Southampton.

The support band had obviously just discovered Blancmange, Erasure and Thomas Dolby. I suspect that they would go down well in Japan. They where called Trademark: the singer has lovely hair but was sadly unable to help me with my Double Glazing enquiry.

Dare is very pop but that doesn't make it a bad album IMO. It certainly gets played more often than their earlier stuff on my system.

'The sound of the crowd' is great when cranked up. I am seeing them next week for my company xmas do. I am struggling to grow my hair asymetrically in the ten days remaining.

Dont worry: Phil has a crew cut.

He is the one on the left.
