Transfering LPs and CDs to a computer.

Folks, I need a bit of technical help.
A friend has asked me to give advice on how to get his colection of lps and cds on to his new computer so that he can mix tracks and burn cds for the car and safe storage. I gather I need some form of analog to digital conversion for the LPs plus digital to digital copying for the cds and something else for downloading from the net?? The records will be played on Lp12, Ittok + MM but have no idea as to what CD play he uses.

I don't know too much about this side of computers / music but I have looked through all that is available on this forum and wondered what peoples latest views and ideas are on this topic.

So can anyone please help?

Roy,

I found this guy's site to be helpful with LPs:
http://www.delback.co.uk/lp-cdr.htm

He wrote a program called Wave Repair that he offers as freeware. It's one of many programs for recording LPs to hard disk. In addition, your friend will need some type of soundcard (either internal or external), some editing software like Audacity for making CDRs from LPs, and the software for burning CDRs (this latter is widely available for free and probably already on his computer). Soundcards are available new from $40 to several hundred.

Recording CDs is easy; the CDR drive and the software for burning CDs is all that's needed.
