Hendrix

I'm looking for a good recording of any Jimi Hendrix material. I have the best of 'experience Hendrix' album on the MCA label but sound quailty is very poor, IMO. I wonder why people like Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan were not recorded very well.

Sorry about the Bowie comment, I remember now he did play on Let's Dance and this was a few months before his own debut album. I seem to recal though that it was Mick Jones who did a lot to publisize Stevie in the early days IIRC.

Greeny, Vai played with Frank Zappa for years before Whitesnake, he was just a kid.

I remember seeing Stevie ray Vaughan at the Reading Festival 1983, he was brilliant.

Fortunately Radio One taped set and played it on the friday rock Show and I have a copy on Cassette tucked away at home.

Its a good reminder of a superb act.

I love Stevie Ray Vaughan, he was the real deal.

When I was playing in violinist Jerry Goodman's band, we did a double bill with SRV. He was brilliant, of course, but also unbelievably loud (not that there's anything wrong with that). He had several amps on stage, but also several backstage turned up to 11. They were pushing so much air back there I swear I saw a funnel cloud.

For anyone who wants to check out SRV - HMV are currently selling 2 or 3 of his albums in the sale at £4.99 each. They're re-issues with some bonus tracks of radio interview snippets.

I picked up Couldn't Stand The Weather and In Step and enjoyed both of them.

Regards,
Steve.

Steve Vai might still be around but Stevie Ray Vaughan, sadly, is not. He died in a helicopter accident.

Being an old fart and around at the time, I had the great fortune to see Mr Hendrix live, with the Experience, just after they released "Hey Joe". It was an astonishing concert (At Tag's Island, Hampton Court as I recall), and none of us had seen or heard anything like it. Still haven't actually. As someone pointed out, you'll never hear anyone slagging Jimi off. Indeed, Stevie Ray Vaughan was a big fan, and does a superb version of "Voodu Chile" on a DVD I've got. Can't remember the name, but something to do with a live TV show in the States.

I've got "Are You Experienced" & "Axis" on original vinyl, & the start of the first track on the former, "Foxy Lady", really does it for me still!

I remember Jimi's appearance on two TV shows in the sixties, the Lulu Show & The Dusty Springfield Show. On Lulu's show, which was live, he started to play "Hey Joe", but then said something like "Forget this rubbish, here's our dedication to Cream", & did a stunning version of "Sunshine of Your Love". Don't think Lulu was too amused! He did a great set with Dusty, and the vibe was excellent between the two of them.

When my teenage daughter started playing guitar, she latched on to Steve Vai, and I quite enjoyed some of his stuff. But then I played her some Hendrix & she could see where I was coming from!

Whoops, I was also going to add that "The Wind Cries Mary" was probably one of the quickest recording sessions ever, with Mr Hendrix doing the whole song straight off in one take! Smile

The Experience was far and away the best backing band Hendrix ever had - but then again not many to choose from in his all too brief career!

Still, for the record I love 'Hey Joe', 'The Wind Cries Mary', 'Purple Haze' and, for me the all-time classic 'Manic Depression'.

I couldn't let this great thread pass without mentioning SRV's version of Little Wing

This is an obsolutely amazing version of this track and can be found on SRV's post mortem release 'The Sky is Crying'. This is a great album.
FWIW, I don't really like SRV's version of Voodo Chile as I don't think it adds anything to the Hendrix version. Little Wing on the other hand.... Wow.
