New Porcupine Tree Al*** - The Incident
Posted by: DenisA on 13 June 2009
Porcupine Tree are happy to announce the forthcoming release of their tenth studio album "The Incident". The record is set to be released via Roadrunner Records worldwide on 21st September, as a double CD.
The centre-piece is the title track, which takes up the whole of the first disc. The 55-minute work is described as “a slightly surreal song cycle about beginnings and endings and the sense that ‘after this, things will never be the same again’.”
The self-produced album is completed by four standalone compositions that developed out of band writing sessions last December - Flicker, Bonnie The Cat, Black Dahlia, and Remember Me Lover feature on a separate EP length disc to stress their independence from the song cycle.
Video footage of the band in the studio working on The Incident, as well as audio previews, will be available online soon. The band will tour extensively to promote the album from mid September onwards.

Check out the new look Porcupine Tree website, launched to coincide with the release of the band's new album The Incident.
Apart from a completely revamped look, the main difference you will notice is that there is now a comprehensive media player on the home page. This includes new and archive video material. Look out especially for an exclusive visual preview of the band's next DVD in the shape of a fully edited version of Way Out of Here from this work in progress, due for release in the Spring. Also check out the film that Lasse Hoile shot for Glass Arm Shattering from the Deadwing album in 2005 - because this song was dropped after only 2 or 3 performances this beautiful film has hardly ever been seen. We are still adding content to the new site, but available now are some new band photographs, and some Incident themed wallpapers.

We were at a beer festival at a local pub last night. I was wearing my FOABP tee-shirt which prompted a conversation with 'Mild man' Quentin - a well known local Hawkwind fan and CAMRA member. Turns out he likes PT too.
Anyway, Mrs S was pondering the merits of the album cover and reckoned it would look good on our wall and today I got an email from our friends at Burning Shed... PT artwork
I just had to have some...
Mrs S wants a large copy of FOABP cover as she reckons the colours would go nicely in the lounge and the eyes would freak out the kids.

In addition to the newly revamped main site, there’s a new photoblog, The Incident On Tour. This, as the title cunningly implies, will be updated regularly during the forthcoming tour. Check out a new set of rehearsal photographs from SW’s camera here.

Not seen anything yet. I think the first half will be the complete Incident songcycle. I reckon in the second set they wiil play the 4 non incident songs and hopefully a completly different selection of older stuff, compared to the last few tours. We'll have some idea next Wed after the Seattle gig.

Stu - I am going to give it time. I have just been travelling round London on the tube and found it good on the ipod as background music. There are no "wow" tracks though that you rush to put on again. Time Flies is the best track and I thought that was weak when it was previewed a few weeks back.
Maybe Steve should slow down a little now and make sure just his very best ideas get released. It would be a shame if they did not take the big leap forward they deserve as a band with this release but from what I have heard this will not win them many more fans.

Received it today and first impressions are that its not one of their best efforts but will persevere with it.

I really like 'Times Flies', but I think there is a lot of padding in the long track. The four track CD is good though.
Not a patch on 'Signify' or 'In Absentia' though. I know a lot of people here like 'Fear of a Blank Planet', I really did not, so I think I prefer this new album.
Oh, and I should say 'Hi', I rejoined the forum after hear about the moderation changes, hence the V2, the old name was still there but inacivated.

I'll just copy from What are You Listening to
Not PTs best but pretty good, more of the same really. Perhaps SW is running out of new ideas? 7.5/10

Just finished the first run through. Never thought I'd say this about a PT album but it's seriously...meh.
Songwriting pretty ordinary, not a lot of intereting instrumental bits and emotionally uninvolving. As Jamie says, Time Flies starts off pretty well, but doesn't go anywhere particularly interesting.
Hmmm. I'll persevere though.

I think I'll try Spotify before making a purchase!

Is that 55min track some sort of Overture for the whole album?

hmmmm hope they play more "old" stuff over here.

I suspect they won't.
I didn't get my CD (from Play) until Wednesday, and having read the comments here I approached it with some caution - especially after the opening bars of the first track!
Having played it a few times now I don't think it is a PT classic but it I think it may be a grower in the way the FoaBP and Deadwing were not. They had an initial impact but I find that when I want a PT fix I pass them by and go for Signify or Recordings or Lightbulb Sun or...
The second CD is quite good though. I think if SW had pruned The Incident by 20 minutes and added those four songs it would be much better. The Sky Moved Sideways was orignially envisaged as a 54 minute song cycle. Hopefully that is out of his system now.
My ltd edition vinyl copy arrived yesterday, packaging looks as good as ever. It was accompanied by a Tonefloat turntable mat and newsletter (so far unread.) Not been able to play the LP as my record spinner is having some TLC at the moment.

I think you are spot on with that.
Looking at the set lists, it is a pity more of the second CD is not being played.
'Middle part of Anesthetize' was called 'The Pills I'm Taking ', when they previewed it on the BBC session a couple of years ago, so it might just get different names on setlists, but is the same track/section.
I suspect there will be some variation in the second set, but the first will be disc one of the new album, as they are promoting that. It might work better live with some 'umph' behind it.
See quite a few of you in a few weeks I suspect.

PT on the Bruce Dickinson Friday Rock show now...
Bruce has just announced that the Steven Wilson interview is coming up later, don't know when. If you miss it you can always Listen Again on iPlayer of course. I'll listen again, cos I can't put up with the dirge playing right now. If you don't like The Incident at the moment, please don't tell me you like this heavy rock crap cluttering up the airwaves

I have listened to TI about 5 times now, from beginning to end.
First couple of plays were a bit hard but now I LIKE IT A LOT. If you listen to the whole thing, its quite intense, just what I like. At first I thought it was a bit incoherent, now I am beginning to think it might be a masterpiece.
