Songs about getting old
Posted by: Slee on 06 April 2003
I'm collecting songs about growing old for a theme cd. Searching my own mainly rock/pop collection I've found the following songs.
When I'm Sixty Four - Beatles
Old Friends - Simon and Garfunkle
Days That Used To Be - Neil Young
Enjoy Yourself - The Specials
When I was Young - Eric Burdon
O.G. Original Gangster - Ice-T
Knocking on Heaven's Door - Bob Dylan
Touch of Grey - Grateful Dead
End of the Line - Traveling Wilbury's
Not very much of a list, I'm afraid, but I'm sure the collective memory of the forumites can help. What songs do you know that deal with themes of growing old, facing mortality and debility, and looking back on youth?
Any genre welcome.
Thanks
Lee

Might be too morbid, since it's about death but what about "The Watch" by Matthews Southern Comfort. It's based on a poem :-
The Watch
I wakened on my hot, hard bed;
Upon the pillow lay my head;
Beneath the pillow I could hear
My little watch was ticking clear.
I thought the throbbing of it went
Like my continual discontent;
I thought it said in every tick:
I am so sick, so sick, so sick:
O death, come quick, come quick, come quick,
Come quick, come quick, come quick, come quick...
Frances Macdonald Cornford
Don't you just love Monday mornings?

Slow Movin' Outlaw
From Waylon Jennings' "This Time"
"The whiskey that once settled the dust and tasted so fine
Now tastes of pain
And the memories it once blotted out
Come back stronger, more clearly with each drink you take
The women that warmed you, and once looked so pretty
Now look haggard and old
Where has the slow-movin', once quick-draw outlaw got to go?"

Mr Slee -
Not that I'm a pedant or anything but wasn't "Enjoy Yourself" written by the mighty Prince Buster and just covered by the Specials?
