I've become my dad

Posted by: Rasher on 24 April 2007

Now I have a grown-up house with lots of grass to cut, I've just bought something that puts me in mind of my dad when I was a toddler, the smell of freshly cut grass mingled with exhaust fumes.
I've just bought a secondhand Atco 14" cylinder petrol mower - in dark green.
I have now become my dad*. This is a defining moment.
I was no older than 5 when my dad was around and my son now is 4, so there is something of continuity about this.
(*Only in the terms of this summer image, thankfully)
Atco. That's the real deal.

I'd love to become my dad but:

a) I'm not in his league

and

b) no kids

I had the interesting reversal the other day. My son asked me to turn down the music so he could work!

Atco - the 'Naim of lawnmowers'...

Please could you do mine whilst you're at it? Thanks. Smile

Dear James,

The real "Naim of lawn mowers" were those estimable machines made by hand by Ransomes, Jeffreys, and Simms, in Ipswich! The same company that made the best ploughs, and potato digging kit...

ATB from Fredrik. [Smiley]!!

I pick it up tomorrow, and I can't wait to try it just for the smell of a tiny unmuffled petrol engine chugging over the lawn (I used to have to mow the grass, but with this it's "mow the lawn"). I'm going to have to Brylcreme my hair and have a pipe in my gob.
It's all so awfully English, don't you think chaps?!
( Eek Oh golly gosh...I'm turning into Parry!! Cucumber sandwiches anyone?)

Only Kubota F3560 for me. Winker

Hmm, sometimes Bolens, Honda, Stiga, Gianni Ferrari or a crappy Toro.

Honda for me. Petrol power rather than mains.

Had it years, keep it warm in the garage, never needed a service, always works, makes a good noise, not over complicated with extras, does what it needs to. Just like naim really.

Ah, but do you keep it powered up at all times?

Nah, couldn't hear it over my V6 Alfa next to it which needs a new head gasket...

Rasher,

Just wait until you lad is old enough to do the lawns for himself.
Mind you, a ride-on does give a huge incentive to a 10yr old Big Grin
And what's more, my 8 yr old can't wait until he is big enough to reach all the pedals...
