Input level matching on NAC 112

Hi all,
Just bought a 112/150/Stageline set.
While trying to adjust the input levels of the CD and Stageline, I recognized that I can indeed increase the gain of the CD as well. (I presume the unit I received is set to factory default even the box was opened) And it can be increased up to a very high level. I was afraid to push more and wonder if there is any limit to this and if there is any danger of harming the equipment.
Anyone encountered the same before?
