Cover songs as good as or better than original...
Posted by: Sicey on 22 September 2005
I did this a while back on another forum.
One for you music fans to mull over....I was thinking about this a couple of months back after listening to the Bridget Jones 2 OST...anyway I came up with a few after being inspired by Will Youngs version of Sade's classic - Your love is king
Suprisingly most of my tracks are all soppy lovey dovey tracks
George Michael/Bonnie Raitt - I cant make you love me
Jagged Edge/Air Supply - All out of love
Gary Jules/Tears for fears - Mad World
Maxwell/Kate Bush - This womens work
Alien Ant Farm/MJ - Smooth Criminal
Kenny Thomas/Force MD's - Tender Love
Will Downing & Mica Paris/Roberta Flack & Donnie Hathaway - Where is the love
oh and that new Hounds of Love Kate Bush cover.
Any more to add people?

Joe's version was great, but I still prefer Ringo

Really? Who did that originally?
My slightly unusual vote, goes to Miles Davis and Time After Time

Needles and pins(The Searchers) - Ramones

Dick Dale & The Deltones - Mirsirlou (theme tune to the movie Pulp Fiction)
This a lively updating of Misirlou originally recorded by the Greek female singer Danai, though there is a version called Mousourlou that is very similar by Michalis Patrinos (1930).

I'm a big fan of Ryan Adams but his (poor) cover of an average song (you know the one I mean) is fairly painful. What about The Pixie's cover of 'Head On'. pure trash but very entertaining; after all, that's what tunes are about eh......................?

I wholeheartedly agree. A very moving performance - one of my absolute favorite late Miles cuts!
And thanks to my friend and fellow Naim Forum member, Stewart Cooper, for turning me on to this performance and gifting me with a copy of the CD.

I find Rod Stewart's "Tomorrow is a long time" much more moving than Dylan's. I sang it to both my baby sons along with some Beatles and Neil Young, and they used to calm down and get off to sleep quite quickly. Likewise Girl from the North country.
I still love the Dylan versions but for some reason Rod Stewart's interpretations were more to my taste.

I've always preferred the Fine Young Cannibal's version of "Ever fallen in love with someone" to the version by the Buzzcocks.
Mary Coughlan's rendition of Heartbreak Hotel is way better than Elvis'.

Every rob of Sweet Leaf (and never the Sabbath original) eg Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, B.h. Surfers, Slick Rick.
Nice riff, shame about the song.

On Love It To Death, Alice Cooper does a stunning version of the Rolf Harris classic Sun Arise.

Friend of the devil - Lyle Lovett
Mercy Seat - Johnny Cash
Love Hurts - Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris
My Favourite Things - John Coltrane
Ain't got no home - The Band
Sea of Love - Cat Power
Cowboy Junkies - Blue Moon
Gregson & Collister - most of Love is a Strange Hotel

Another Cat Power cover, though it's sure to be considered sacrilege: (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. So different it's hard to say it's as good, much less better. But it's certainly effective.
