How should I power my headline?
Posted by: kid spatula on 01 October 2003
I have just placed an order for a s/hand headline which should arrive in a week or so.
I'm currently running a 42.5 into a 90 with no power supplies (apart from the one in the 90, obviously).
Should I get a Napsc to power the headline, get a flatcap2 to power the headline and the 42.5 or get a hicap and swap between the headline and 42.5 as needs be?
Opinions please!

Definitely not the 3rd.

I've already got some sennies (HD600s).
I can get a s/hand flatcap2 for £375 from a local dealer and was wondering whether it would have a significant effect on the 42.5 - any views?
But, yeah, I'm pretty much thinking I should get a s/hand napsc (hint hint!) and then get a hicap later on.

I went throught he same thing about a year ago. A thing called a SNAPs came along and bit me for the same price as a NAPSC. It was modded to dual rail and needs a SLIC like the Hicap. Is very good half way house. I have moved to a hicap again as I had one spare when I sold my 82. So that's another option you could consider?

mr spatula,
The Flatcap 2 sounds brilliant powering the Headline, better than a Hicap 1 in my view, but will show up any shortcomings in your source component.

I would seriously consider a pair of Supercaps. One for each ear. Pricey but nicey ! If, as inevitably happens in these cases, your wife starts to worry that your family seems to be missing out on the essentials of life (food, shelter, warmth, sanitation etc) and that the kids should be at school getting an edumication instead of sweeping chimineys, just point out that she owns a fifty percent shareholding in the worlds most expensive (and bestest) pair of cans. She'll well pleased. Hunger ? Schmunga. Just don't mention that you are lying, because I've got 12 Supercaps, an armagrudgeon and 5 clingos on my headline and I'm just getting warmed up.

If you can find a S/h SNAPS you should be able to get a good cheap solution these should cost no more than £50-100 and will be better than a NAPSC but worse than a Flatcap

SNAPS seem to go for about £130 or so on eBay, so could deffo be an option.
I think I'll put a wanted ad on pfm and hifi for sale.
Thanks to all
PS Minks - I hardly think that the HD600s are the most expensive cans in the world - or was that your point?
As for my source component - I've got a p25 with a dynavector 10x5 tied onto it with string.

W.a.d.r., always power the pre-amp and the Headline from separate power-supplies using, preferably, a Hicap or better for the Headline. The results will be stupendous but cost, compared with the Headline/Flatcap option, will naturally be governed by the extent to which you listen with 'phones.
I just wish I could hear a Headline/Supercap combo., knowing how wonderful the Headline/Hicap combo. (heard via a 52 up front) happens to be.
Thanks and cheers..

Currently umming and ahhing over whether to get a s/hand snaps or a napsc - both at £100.
It seems like a no-brainer but the SNAPS is a 1985 vintage. Will it work ok, or will I have to send it for a service? If so, should I get the NAPSC instead?
Oh, and there's no way I can justify a hi-cap for my headline - I don't have money to burn y'know!
As for a supercapped headline, surely this is madness?
