Some questions about my system?
Posted by: i am simon 2 on 02 August 2002
As I am within the "limeted funds" catagory, my Naim gear is all second hand.
The only exception is my A5 cable that did in fact cost more than my 42.5
1)
I ask of you, how high up the current (or the most recently discontinued range) would I have to go, to surpass the 42.5 , 160 combo?
I am hoping the answer will make me chuffed with myself for being a hifi bargin Guru.
2)
I hope to borrow a highcap from a friend this weekend to try on the 42.4.
Will I be able to give it back?
Do I need any special cables to hook it up?
I thank you in advance for your help.

A fair way - perhaps to 72/Hi/250 for really significant improvements if your current kit is in good condition.

You'll need a 5 pin SNAIC to connect the pre to the Hi. The 4 pin SNAIC you already have will be required between the Hi and the power amp.

Hi Simon,
lots of folks buy s/h all the time.
However the first thing you need to do IMO is get a CD5 (at the least). There's two or three for sale s/h on Tony's pinkfish forum.

leave the planet out of it!
I A B demed the Planet and the 5 (although I could not afford the 5) and althogh I could apprecite the differnt league, I could not afford it and the 2000 was so good for the money, better than anything that costs up to the price of the 5 (Jupiter excluded although I have not heard it).
For the near future I will not spend chunks of cash as large as £1000 on the hifi.
In a few months I might start demming s/h speakers up to about 500 GBP.
However if I like the loaned Hcap I might think about one of thoes.
Anyway without a high cap I am not sure if the pre will be good enough to resolve the improvment of the 5 through the ruarks, as the my planar three is not the leagues ahead of the planet, that i think it should be.
The 160 is great and i will not replace it for a long time. I think that if a high cap improves the sound I get from the PLanar three, but there is not much improvment from the 2000, I will look at swaping it for a 5, if not I will look at loud speakers.

I agree - you need a 72/hi/250 to beat what you have, if it's in good condition.
If you find you want to givethe hicap back, I suggest that you take it out of the system for a while before you do. Some people don't really hear what the hicap does until after it's gone.
Have fun.
