Bluetak vs Top Spikes
Posted by: John G. on 04 December 2002
I'm shifting my Tukans to another system and replacing them with ATC SCM-7. I will be using my same SO wall brackets for the ATC's but the ATC's are too narrow to sit on the spikes.
I was thinking of using a small bit of Bluetak instead of the spikes as there will be enough space on top of the stand for this arrangement.
Any ideas on how this will work vs spikes?
Thanks

Spikes do sound better than bluetak, but if I were you I wouldn't worry about it, since if the speakers are too narrow, you don't have a choice do you?

Can you not put something onto the spikes (eg small garden concrete slab from B&Q) then the ATCs onto the slab. No spikes and blutak will I think 'kill' your sound.

If they sound good with the bluetak, I'll probably stick with that. If not, I'll see once I get the speakers if there's enough room on the inside edge to retap new spike holes for the back two spikes. I'll be able to retap new spike holes for the two front spikes without a problem since I have the whole front bar of the wall stand to work with.

I could give that a try and see how they sound. Would the speakers sit directly on the concrete slab or would you use bluetak between the slab/speaker? Are you saying that speakers on concrete on spikes would be better than speakers directly on spikes?
Thanks for the suggestions.

Well I’m sure you’re all dying to find out how I this all shook out.;)
I got the speakers today and tried them on a very small ball of Bluetak with the speakers parallel to the wall, they sounded OK but I made them better by toeing them in 35 mm from the back wall on one side and 3mm on the other side. They still seemed to missing something with this arrangement and I figured it was the Bluetak interface. With the speakers toed in the way they were I realized there was enough room to add two new spike to the top of the stand. I drew up a template of the stand and the speaker and calculated where the new holes should go. I ran out to the hardware store and picked up a drill bit/tap and tap wrench.
I completed the work kind of late but listened a bit and things sound much better, I can’t wait to give the system a blast tomorrow! I’m very happy I was able to continue using the top spikes.
Cheers

Think what you have now done is better - ie fitted new spikes.

If the diameter of the top spikes on the Kan II stands is the same as Kan I you may be able to get a set of eight directly from Linn. Linn started making Kan II stands again about 2 years ago and I think has again ceased production but the top spikes may still be available.
If not you might want to try obtaining generic top spikes from somewhere like Sound Organisation and drill and tap those somewhere adjacent to the corners of the stand.
