Top end on an LP12
Posted by: Steve Hall on 13 December 2002
I've just returned to the land of the vinyl with the help of a certain forum member (thanks Tony).
The LP12 has an Akito and a DV10x4MkII into a MM phonoboard in my 52/naxo/180's SBL's.
The 10x4 and the phono boards were new.
The LP12 is in the 818xx range, and has been cirkus'ed.
Its now had a few hours of usage, about 20 sides worth, and all the feeling is appearing, but the top end is not.
Any ideas?

And replace it with at least an Ittok.
The rest of your system (why are people spelling it sistem?) looks like simply a clear lens allowing you to hear the limitations of the Akito.
When I "did the dem" on the LP 12 many years ago the differences between the various Linn arms (with the Akito being the bottom of the range at the time) were clearly audible and musically important. Your cartridge, if it is not worn out, should be excellent. Look for a better arm, at least a used Ittok...

The Akito is temporary, and when funds allow, im off on the Aro route (no pun intended).
But, in the mean time, I shouldnt need to.
Any ideas why its not right as is?

Hiya
IMHO an LP12 is improved dramatically by a decent stand ( 4800000000000000 opinions on the Forum as to which is best - Stallions WILL BE THE CORRECT ONE!!!! )
I use an Audiotech Sondek stand; some people rate believe it or not, Ikea coffee tables!
Are you using a stand?

It might be worth checking out the vertical tracking angle to make sure that's set correctly. I understand it can make a significant difference to the bass/treble balance. My local Linn engineer tells me that raising the back of the arm increases the top-end, whereas lowering it increases the bass.
I have an Ittok with a 10x4Mk11 (still relatively new) and there's certainly no lack of top-end.

Give it another 50 hours run-in. The 10x4 has been known to take up to 100 hours to run in properly. That said, if there's really no top-end then you need to look at the VTA. Of course, you could be comparing to the CDX which has a fairly wild top-end already. The Dynavector's is likely to seem a tad rounded by comparison.

Frank,
Yes I have a CDX, and in a one on one (same track different format) the CDX is very bright in comparison.
Mike,
Stand? Currently is mounted top shelf on an Ash stand - Wifey wont let me near my Mana shelf before Santa tries to escape from behind the gas fire this year.
Dave,
VTA? Cant comment, Tony Lonorgan set the arm/cartridge up for me will have to chat with him about that.
I think I'll leave it for now, use it, listen and let the cartridge/phono boards boards break in.
If its still not 100% in the new year, I'll get the VTA checked out.

A long time ago now my girlfriend purchased a BIG BUD record, I thought at the time (due to my musical tastes) that it was shite.
A while later I played it again it sounded fantastic, I couldn't pin why I preffered the sound to my CDP but I did.
A consequence this year has been the purchase of around 400 vinyl albums, and one thing I notice is that the treble is a lot smoother.
But it did take a bit of getting used to.
