VS1 (again), Unity gain (again), DVD (again)
Posted by: Jonathan on 19 June 2003
I have 82/2 x hi, cd2, 250 and es22s are and a Panasonic Gas plasma (with component, pc and composite inputs).
1. What will the VS1 do for my system (hopefully make switching video sources easier).
2. Can I get unity gain for 82 and whats the cost (I live outside the UK).
3. I currently have a sony dvd 7700, which is pretty good. But will the naim DVD thats planned (either) be suitable to replace both this and my CD2.
Thanks
Jonathan
ps: no answer to this on a private chat request. Wonder why?

Hi Jonathan,
the VS1 will certainly make life easy with regard to switching video sources especially the planned facility to allow you to input on a number of different video standards (i.e. RGB, Component, S Video, Composite) and to output a single format most suitable for your display - better known as transcoding.
Other features that will probably be included are progressive scan & and the option of some fairly sophisticated video processing to maximise the potential of large screen TVs and projectors.
We'll be able to give more details when the VS1 is ready to go - most likely later in the year.
Your NAC 82 can be upgraded to include Unity Gain. You will need to sacrifice one of the Tape loops which will then become a dedicated AV input with unity gain. Unfortunately for you, this work must be done here at Naim. Once you factor in the shipping costs from Greece and then back again together with the actual conversion cost (around £130), if you were ever considering an upgrade to one of the later pre-amps then this may sway you in that direction. All of the current pre-amps have an AV input with unity gain as standard.
As for the DVD players, most certainly we would expect them to comprehensively outperform your Sony DVD7700 in all areas. As for CD replay, well, on the basis of the best of the current crop of DVD players as CD players, if we can even approach CD replay performance of say the CD5 then we'll be way ahead of anybody else.... Frankly, it's too early to say how CD replay will turn out and until I've actually had a good listen for myself it would be premature for me to comment.

p.s By the way, to whom did you send your private topic? I have received nothing from you.

Richard, thanks for the info.
I dont recall anyone in particular I posted the private chat to. I can see though that it was viewed 3 times. If that helps.
Regards
Jonathan
ps: I too would appreciate a ball park cost for the VS1 - from what you describe, it could be pricy... so I also need to start saving

It's too early to give any definite price indications on the VS1 but it's looking like the standard unit will be less than the AV2 and a fully loaded unit will probably come out at around AV2 money.

Jonathan,
I'm not sure if you are assuming that private chat is a way to contact Naim?
You need to invite specific people to your Chat (who could be Richard, or any or all of the other moderators).
Sorry if you already knew this.
cheers, Martin

Does anyone know if the VS1 or AV2 offer any audio delay. In the USA we have wonderful HDTV broadcasts available now. The picture quality is unsurpassed, but there is a delay between the audio and video. Other mid-fi companies offer a delay switch to fix this problem...any chance the VS1 or AV2 will offer a similar solution?
Thanks.

Thanks.

Hi Chris,
yes, the VS1 will have the facility to trigger a delay in the AV2 - this will be needed for the video processing in the VS1. I can't recall the delay time options but I have posted details before so try searching back a bit.

Hi Richard,
does this mean that the audio signal has to be routed through the VS1?
Can the audio delay also be done as a software upgrade of the AV2?

Richard,
Will the DVD player be Region Free and PAL/NTSC compatible as standard and will the VS1 be able to accept PAL/NTSC inputs? As I live in Japan this is rather important to me.
Nick.
