iTunes-clean

Posted by: kevinrt on 14 June 2008

Whilst browsing the iTunes store I have noticed that a number of albums have the word 'clean' appended to the track names. DOes this mean that they have created a clean version of the track or that the standard version of the track is passed as 'clean'.

The album I've noticed this on most recently is 'Oh, my darling' by Basia Bulat. Can anyone who owns a shop-bought copy of the album comment as to whether there is any content that would need to be altered to be passed as 'clean'?

thanks

I own both the UK and Canadian version of the brilliant debut album by Basia Buklat. There is no lyrical content that anybody could object to.

Before I knew

it was the first time I fell in love
the first time I felt my heart
it was the first time I sang out loud all through the night
but before I knew I was lost,
before I knew I was a prisioner
and I still can't find a way to make it right

I Was A Daughter

If you call tomorrow I will dream I was a daughter
Weavin through these brand-new silver streams
Turned into dusty roads that we both wandered on
We prayed to perfect Avalon
We wished for anyone to take us home

If you want to build this house with me
Oh what a story
This is how they'll all remember me
We were the lucky ones that would survive the flood
With potted flowers in our blood
Pretendin that we don't know where we bleed
All the pretty fall

We fell asleep but we couldn't hear their little words
We swam in the rivers, sang with the birds
Gave away our hearts before we knew what they were
What a pretty fall
(don't sing too loud, they are asleep)
Didn't even know
(don't sing too loud, they are still dreaming)
We sang out with the birds
(don't sing too loud, they are asleep)
Gave away our hearts before we knew what they were
(don't sing too loud, they are asleep)
What they were
Oh what they were

Little Waltz

You and I, we make a grand salute
stare at eachother like lost little birds across the room
and I remember the way you looked
I learned how to dance, but I'd never shown it to you

my love,
I know I was wrong, but you know that you'll always be
my love
stay for a while while our leaves are still green
please, for me

I know I tried, but it's hard sometimes
the roots don't take, it takes a while
and you pull at the strings
but they're broken, it seems
the dance isn't over for me, no

my love,
I know I was wrong, but you know that you'll always be
my love
stay for a while while our leaves are still green
please, for me

December

I touched the ink on my paper,
a permanant scar i'm gonna carry forever to remember your arms
and though your eyes were december when you had june in your heart

and now your hands are so restless,
I never knew how you felt
and now i'm crossing my fingers, cause nothing else helps,
and I don't want to forget you but I can't help myself

I want to hang on even though you're gone
and it wont be long 'til winter's gone again

oh, oh, I want to hang on even though you're gone
and it wont be long 'til winter's gone again

Snakes and Ladders

These mirrors you've broken are your cry for art.
Salt and pepper shakers over your shoulders, cross your heart.
Don't you know it's bad luck to stay in one place for too long?
You've been left and divorces you've had, helpess when they go.

So we play a game of snakes and ladders,
gambled our mistakes, didn't know what could come after.
Threw away the cards. Who thinks it could matter?
Oh, who believes in fate anyway?

When only you could be the one
to win out over me,
when it isn't just a game. It's the way we come undone.
What a perfect taxi town. How we dance around and,
oh oh, like we didn't even notice, oh oh oh.
I love the way we come undone.

Thought I saw something hard and in the yard
but it was bad weather to keep a watch out in the dark.
You know, all this time I've been playing for your heart
But I never let it on. I'll have to watch you play the part.

So we played a game of snakes and ladders,
gambled our mistakes, didn't know what could come after.

I love the way we come undone

Oh My Darling

There are two things I will carry in my pockets at the end
oh, my darling,
you are one of them
the way you look when you have a story to begin,
oh, my darling,
that's the other half

and I will never lose them,
no i'll never never show them like a prize
I will keep them out of sight
and I will never give them up to any ceiling
promise or a lie,
they are mine until I die, until I die

Why Can't It Be Mine

Last night I saw you spin around in my head
Turn the lights off and settle down inside
Feeling as far but it always dies in the night
Just close your eyes
Hold your breathe, and then

I wanna believe you
You know that I try
It's just the way that you look sometimes
Oh it's been hard on me
It's only feeling
But after all this time, why can't it be mine?

Do do do do
Oh oh oh
La da da da da da da

And you made up your mind
For the lasting place
One little thought and I'll forget everything
Just one last time before we're all sleep
Reach across the space tonight to me

And I will believe you
It's just the way that you look sometimes
Oh it's been hard on me
It's only feeling
But after all this time, why can't it be mine?

Do do do do
Oh oh oh
La da da da da da da da da

Oh oh oh oh
Why can't it be mine?
Oh oh oh oh
Why can't it be mine?
Oh oh oh oh
Why can't it be mine?

The Pilgriming Vine

Sometime now I've been divine in the end of a snowy morning
Sometime now I've been afraid that the pilgriming vine is
Finally coming to take me
I could be one of them waiting
I could be one of them falling down below
So quietly wishing my only
Never looks down mother maple
If he goes
Never looks down if he goes

Tomorrow I'll know if the silver in your eyes
Crossing down on your cheek
And tomorrow I'll know by the rubies in your voice
They've been calling your name to me lately
You have been one of them waiting
I have been one of them falling
Down below so
Tell me you're always my only
Never look down mother maple
If I go
Never look down if I go

Sometime now I've been divine in the end of a snowy morning
Sometime now I've been afraid that the pilgriming vine is
Finally coming to take me
Taste it and tell me it's savoury
Hold it up high to the light and
Let it grow and
Tell me you're always my only
Never look down mother maple
If you go
Never look down if you go

Birds of Paradise

think I'll lie a little longer
Wait for the crowds to go
Maybe I'll die in this unholy mass
And I'll be free

Yes that's what they say that I would be
When we came to watch the world be over
But there's too many fools
On this boat that made
I can hardly see the water

What's happened to me
I was down on my knees
I was praying to leave
But I never know when I've gone too far

This disaster in me
What a beautiful dream
That told me I'd be cleaner
Told me I'd be closer to God

Oh, the birds of paradise
Came to me yesterday
Laughed when they told me my fate
We'd be cold, we'd be tired, but we could breathe
And one day I'm gonna leave this place

What's happened to me
I was down on my knees
I was praying to leave
But I never know when I've gone too far

This disaster in me
What a beautiful dream
That told me I'd be cleaner
Told me I'd be closer to God

A Secret

A heart is so easy to keep
when I think of the curious look in your eyes and impossible
oh, only you could really know
i'll never let a little secret go

all of the times you were near I forgot to say
'I'm a non-believer, but I'll pray to you every day
if it would make your eyes forever stay that way
if it would make you want to stay with me'

all the times you've been far away, wondering
I've been uncovering words I've been waiting to say to you
oh, only you could really know
i'll never let a little secret go

There is absolutely nothing offensive in Basia material, brilliant yes, offensive never.

Personally, I dislike artists that try to shock or be offensive as it just is a pathetic attempt to cover up song writing inadequacies. I file such musical impostors under tedious beyond belief.

Basia on the other hand is filed under music that deserves to be played very often - innovative, fresh and exciting- exactly the way it should be.

So perhaps it is just a way of Apple labelling the music as suitable for all music lovers.

Thanks ROTF.

Incidentally, I will be seeing your other great love at the Cornbury Festival in a few weeks. Looking forward to it.

I first noticed the "clean" label next to a downloaded episode of "The Thomas Jefferson Hour" in my iTunes program. I clicked on the word and was taken to a page within the iTunes store (unfortunately I can't seem to cut and paste it here) that gave a short description of what they mean by it. Unfortunately, the description does not render the issue crystal clear: "The use of the Clean Lyrics label is to differentiate the editied version of an album or song whose content has been modified from its original form so that it does not require the Parental Advisory Label" That statement is right below a description of the "Parental Advisory Label" that is too long for me to type by hand here. At any rate, "The Thomas Jefferson Hour" is a weekly show of historical interest that could never be characterized to contain any objectionable material, so I also do not understand exactly what the "clean" statement is supposed to mean, even after going to the trouble of researching it.

Norman

Thanks, just had a look at that. I didn't find it first time around.

It does seem to suggest a modified version, which doesn't fit with the examples mentioned in this thread.

Hi 555

No sonic difference that I can hear - the UK version can out first with 12-tracks. The Canadian version followed later with an extra track In The Night; I bought it for the extra song. The UK version has a slightly bigger picture of Basia on the cover.

However the marketing of Basia's music is a bit annoying

Her new single

Limited edition U.S. tour single.
A side is a sublime reading of Sam Cooke's 'Touch The Hem Of His Garment'.
B side is a totally new extended version of 'Before I Knew'.
Both tracks are exclusive to this release.
Grab 'em quick as these won't be around very long

Why this approach? Just put them on the end of the next album as bonus tracks or am I missing something. Fortunately, because of this forum, I was alerted when these tracks were available for free download. I'm assuming this single is taken from the Daytrotter Sessions, which has two further tracks including an alternative versions of the superb The Pilgriming Vine and also contains True Love Will Find You In The End. There is also the In The Night EP.

Tracking Basia's releases is not easy.

Basia's new hat as worn for the excellent Radio K Sessions

Posted on: 15 June 2008 by 555
Thanks for the info' ROTF.

Basia's releases certainly are slippery;
I got excited about 'Touch The Hem Of His Garment' until I discovered it's vinyl or download only. Frown

I see the In The Night CD contains 'Touch The Hem Of His Garment', but is is the same version as on the U.S. tour single?

Do you know if the Daytrotter & Radio K Sessions are available on the silver stuff?

The Canadian winter is cold, but did Basia hunt the beast herself? Eek

Download only and it's 128 kb/s MPEG1-Layer3 (MP3) in to the bargain, I'm afraid. Though they can be got from iTunes though I'm not sure what format you get it in.

You can download the Daytrotter session for free from here

and the Radio K In-Studio Session from here

Otherwise the single is vinyl only

Basia and her friends went into the night to hunt down her new hat.

Thanks for the extra info' ROTF, & a great vid' from Basia & Co.

Reminds me a little of the Bat For Lashes 'What's A Girl To Do?' video.

A hat hunt of Basia's that went wrong?
