Best sounding LP12 wood finish

Posted by: hobiecat on 08 November 2001

Hi all guys,
as I'm considering to buy a new LP12 turntable, I would like to know if, as someone says, there's a wood finish (walnut, afromosia, cherry, black...) to be preferred soundwise.
Thanks a lot.

Ciao,
Paolo

This I have wondered myself, after never hearing a dodgy demo with any black LP12s...

Afromosias with fluted trim have also sounded good, and Linn still make them apparently.

It is probably the set-up that is the crucial bit that affects the performance, not the finish.

Andrew

P.S. what do you reckon to your 240s in comparison with 140s? I've heard 240s once, and it was one of the very few demos that had the Keltiks sound good.

Andrew,
thanks for your reply. I rate LK240s well above LK140s, much nearer the Klout class infact.

Cheers,

Didn't Julian refuse to set up active systems in years gone by unless the LP12 was black ?

I think I read this in Hi-FI Answers some years back.

I can claim two points on this discussion, as I have a black and a afromoisa fluted one.

I believe that it was the absence of the superior hand built (in Glasgow) 'Black' Ittok that JV objected to wrt active systems.

I believe that Julian had a hand (read: was instrumental) in the development of that venerable arm (and may very well have been responsible for pushing Linn towards development of what armaments have since materialised from north of Hadrian's Wall, just like Naim's original Armageddon mods spured Linn on to further update the deck and improve on the old Valhalla PS).

Maybe Paul S. could confirm this, one way or t'other, with a sly winking smiley, as my second hand memory of events could be a bit foggy.

Thanks you all for your reply

Shahreza,

Yes, I'm going to buy the LP12 brand new. I think it will last for many many years in my system and don't want to risk to buy one used with some hidden damage.

JC,

I owned one LP12 when I was a student, and sold it for money reasons. Never sold my vinyl collection anyway smile !
First configuration will be with K9, Ekos and Valahalla (a spare one from a friend who have upgraded to Lingo). Then I hope will come Lingo and something like an Arkive II cool

All the best,
Paolo

I used to sell LP12's a while back & we thought that they all sounded about the same except for rosewood, which sounded worse. Some LP12's were also pigs (sorry Mr P) to set up, but got there in the end.

I swapped my afromosia some years ago for a rosewood and the rosewood sounds a bit better.

That's a bit of a naughty question as I believe the softest hardwood is balsa, so I guess the answer is 100%.

Richard

What is the point in not cutting down a tree. It will die of old age and be of use to no one.

By using it to make stuff such as plinths we all get to enjoy it.

I am not defending the destruction of the rainforest but there is nothing wrong in using trees for manufacturing purposes if it is done under controlled conditions. Most teak and aframosa is now cultivated under controlled conditions and provides a good income to those involved in the industry.

If we could just find a way better manage the worlds forestry resources, and while we are at it, figure out a way to get those big teddy bear loafs to copulate more often in captivity, then we could all be off to the market to pick up some afromosia wood chips and a nice fresh Panda roast!
