CDS3 Issues
Posted by: greeny on 13 November 2003
I had a CDS3 on home demo last Friday night, I won't comment on the sound quality but there were a couple of usage issues that I had.
I am a CDX owner so I am not familiar with the top loading mech of CDI or CDS2, but I found disk loading on the CDS3 to be quite a slow process. The lid descent is slow, Do people just generally push the lid down manually?
Disk access time is very slow (vs CDX) once the lid is down we are talking 5+ seconds before the CD is ready to play. (in CDX once door is shut I can play within 1 second). Also track access is slow. There is also significant mechanical noise when accessing the CD or track.
Ok these are pretty minor complaints, but they did annoy me. So for those with a CDS3 do you find any of this a problem/annoyance. Would especially like to hear from anyone who has gone from CDX to CDS3.

Why do people bother replying to say the thread is a waste of time. Just ignore it.
There are plenty of threads talking about the CDS3 sound quality
These issues are minor but as a CDX user were immediatly obvious to me. The question I think is reasonable on whether these are normal (yes it would apppear) and are they annoying in the long run. I guess the answer is no.
I might be trying to think of excuses, But Order will be made this week.

Question for Greeny - have you ordered a CDS3, or are you looking for excuses not to?

It's clearly jealousy!
I guess that most people wish that they had so little to worry about in their life that the 3-4 seconds wait for their cd player lid to close would actually be an issue.

Minky, stinky binky. Even these tiny inconweniences can be resolved which I spent a couple of joyful hours last night carrying ooot.
First, lash a small pointy rock with old string to the lid and smear the lid with lard which protects it from even the thickest dust.
The fill the mechanism with warm porridge which helps speed up the run-in time.
My only question is, I wonder if this invalidates the warranty?

Really? My Mk1 takes anything between 2 and 20 seconds to start playing, irrespective of the type of disc, and at random. Occasionally the lid doesn't centre properly and the bloody thing won't catalogue at all. And the lid won't always close by itself - it's a late model with the worn die-cast lid machining, so I have to live with it. Shame really, 'cos it sounds good when the music finally comes out
I'm thinking of getting a Mk3 to replace it since I won't use a player with pucks no matter how good it might sound... ...but it MUST be a toploader!
I'm sorry, but if you're dropping HOW MUCH dosh on a CDS3, I'd not touch it if it wasn't EXACTLY what I wanted - sound quality aside. I too would, if I was expecting fast cataloging/track access and didn't get it, pass on the thing. Yeah, it's a small annoyance perhaps to one person, but it would annoy the hell out of me - especially if I was spending that much cash. It's the little things that mean a lot in this life, and if you are buying something of that calibre you expect the best. Though maybe your viewpoint's different if you're loaded rich, own a house, and a CDS3 doesn't work out to a third of your gross annual pay...

I still really struggle to believe this is an issue with some people.
I seriously have to question what motivates this and why speed of start up, lids closing etc could possibly be an issue.
Even the remotest delay (that I have never noticed) is compensated ten fold by its performance which is just gobsamcking.
If you want something that loads and goes between tracks quickly, get a Sony Discman.
Un be bloody leivable!

This thread started off as a perfectly reasonable comment on some operational issues of the '3' by Greeny.
So; let's cut to the chase, Greeny - what about the sound this baby knocks out?

Rico,
Sadly all CDS3 related thoughts have been overshadowed by recent events. It’s going to take more than sodding Christmas to get me over the defeat of the AB's at the hands of the Wallybees last weekend, for which I hold Mr Christober Murphenstein personally responsible. If the bastard hadn't decided to be Mr hot-shot and take his Lear jet trans-Tasman for the match it is my belief that we would have probably almost definitely have won. Maybe. Anyone want to buy a 552 ?

Hey why get defensive chaps.
The sound quality is as I expected, very good.
I ordered mine on Tuesday this week.
.
I knew if I mentioned sound quality that is all the thread would have been about.
So anyone taken delivery in the past few weeks what was the wait time, my dealer suggests 3-4 weeks, is this realistic??

What he needs is Krell kps25sc player. He can adjust lid closing speed to his heart's content.
What eeks me with Naim players is their cheezy remote.

there is one aspect of the CDS1 i prefer.
the laser head cutout in it's tray is deep enough to let the user
insert a finger/thumb to lift/drop the disc w/o touching the tray.
without it (as in S2/3) the disc being kinda flush with the tray,
can result in finger/thumb tip smudges to the tray, requiring more care.
on the other hand, more dust/gunk prolly gets into the trasport area in the S1.

Narcom 3 or Flash and why?
One minor gripe I have with the '2' and '3' is that disc removal is a two handed operation, to avoid marking the bottom of the tray.
I had rather hoped that some 'digit dips' might have appeared on the '3'.
Greeny; on the question of 'burn-in' I'd say:-
Good, if a bit hairy from cold.
24 - 48 hours: (like most Naim products) at its worst - the sound fills out, smooths out and goes fat and shut-in.
3 days onwards: she starts to open up and has more grip on the sound.
One month: the great leap forward (who said that?)
Two months: The Full Montague.
Enjoy the ride.

Okay then Minky, if you really must let it go, I'll take it away if you pay me a ton.
Surely Mr Mitchell holds some of that responsibility? I'm sure Mr Murph will have returned to welly hoarse from barricking our much maligned team, and hence should assume no responsibilty for their failure to deliver when it mattered most (did they ever really have a chance?).
Anyways, let me know when you've got the cash together (ok, a cheque will be fine), and I'll bring around the cart for the 552. I could even let you have me 252 in place as a generous part of de deal.

Mmm Rico, on the face of it your offer sounds just too darn good to be true. There must be a catch ..
Posted on: 21 November 2003 by Rico
correctamundo. You'll need to supply some carrots, lest the donkey's too weak to make the trip back outa your driveway for the return journey.
Oh okay then, I'll bring a sack of carrots for the donkey, there you go no catches at all.

GREAT NEWS:
I can mod your CDS3 to start playing before the lid is closed. Thus you have the best of both world a slow closing lid and music starting faster.
This upgrade for only 10% of the player value. And that's not all, for a small additional fee, i keep the player for 2 weeks to burn-in the mod.
I'll do it at home, nobody else will touch your player. It is always better to send the XPS with it.
Now, ready for the next controversy: does it plays better with the lid up or down.

You sound like a genuine chap.
I'm putting my '3' back in the box now.
Where do I send it?

Mods to CDs3
A reviewer commented that placing a dark cloth over the playing CDS3 improved the sound by 10% in a bright environment ( I think) - will the new new high speed lid be a darker plastic or will this final tweak be still in the domain of the end user.

I'm sure Manu will apply a quick coat of Black Hamerite to the lid as part of the upgrade process at an additional cost of 250C$
