How do you like my rack?

Posted by: Surfing Alien on 28 February 2003

Hi Folks!

In order to stack my system I've constructed my own rack. Í like the Naim Fraim, but I think it's quite expensive and maybe a little over the top for my modest setup.

My rack is made up out of 5 triangle shaped pieces of 18 mm birch multiplex.
I've used polished 3 cm round aluminum (13,2 cm long) to space them.
All equipment is placed on 2 cm thick marble plates, same size as the Naim stuff. The marble plates rest on spikes (3 pcs per plate)
I've also used spikes to minimize floor contact.

As for sound improvement, I sense improvement, but I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the presence of the rack itself (room acoustics)

Any thoughts?

Regards,
Peter

Any reason for choosing marble instead of glass for the little sub tables?

Looks pretty good btw

Hi all!

Yhanks Tempo. Me thinketh the same :-)

Redeye: Mostly for stability... marble is quite heavy I can assure you. But to be honest, I like marble because of the "natural" touch, especially black with a white streak, better than glass.

Good to hear you like it!

Hi Randall!

Am I missing out on a specific meaning of the word rack? Something gross perhaps? Remember, I'm Dutch :-)

Peter - When an American tells a woman she has a great rack, he ain't talkin' about her Hutter...

...her Fraim, maybe.

PS - If an audio rack such as the one you made was available commercially, I'd seriously consider buying it. Fraim-ish, but classier (IMO). Very nice.

Hi Mark,

Darn, I thought I was original :-) But maybe this is Dutch taste!

By the way, soud improvement was not my objective. I only used the spikes etc. because it was recommended by my dealer. Besides, I needed something to place tha marble on. Also, the choice of aluminum did not have anything to do with all the warnings on this (and other) sites to never use ferroid materials in proximity of the equipment; it's just that I've used aluminum in a few other pieces of furniture that I've made. A little prosaic maybe, but nevertheless the truth :-)

Despite all this, I'm not so stupid I don't want to try your suggestion. There's allways room for improvement! In your design, did you use ground spikes in the first place like I do? This was an addition my dealer more or less insisted on :-)

If anyone has more info on how to improve, please let me know!

Regards,
Peter

Nice job Sean2, clean simple and only three pieces of equipment, very nice. I also have a tuner as that's half of my listening.

Hi Sean2,
Any chance of some details concerning your rack design. I am in the process of putting together a rack and would appreciate some tips.
