New Armageddon & breaking-in
Posted by: Top Cat on 17 October 2003
Hi folks.
Not long since purchased a new-style Armageddon for the LP12 and I'm wondering whether it needs to break-in in the same way that amps, speakers, etc., need to break-in.
Also, if it does need breaking-in, does it need to be physically spinning the platter to do it, or does just having it connected to the mains do enough?

Top Cat,
just curious, does the new style armageddon has the light on the Naim logo?

top cat: i dont know how different the new geddon is from the old, but when i bought my old style geddone a few years ago, i was astounded by how good it was st from the box. i didnt detect significant warm up issues. i keep mine off (i.e the LP12 motor off) and i havent noticed any degradation because of this.
the vinyl section of my hifi sounds absolutely magic right now, as i have reported before.
let us know if YOU notice any improvements over time... (a bit difficult to isolate though...). but more importantly,
enjoy...

Urm, it doesn't even have a Naim logo on the front, only the slightly curved 5-series front and a button to switch the power to the motor on or off. Functional without being over-styled, it's a smart component - much better looking than a Lingo anyway
Naim have learnt a lot about making smart components since the iffy days of olive & ugly buttons... which must have been a phase they were going through as the Nait 2 is far smarter and better to look at than the Nait 3 was.
Anyway, back to the 'Geddon. I'm asking about break-in as my experience has been that most audio needs to be broken in but I have never needed to break in a power supply before...

As of now, a LP12/Armageddon/Aro remains a dream... though i got the M**a all ready for it.

No "break-in" required, as it's not really a virgin. It can buzz a bit when its warming up though, reminds me of an old girlfriend!
No light. Shame as I keep mistaking it for a paper weight.
Inf: Turn it on play 5 albums, and smile...!

Hi John
Welcome to the 'End Of The World' club!
FWIW; I find that my Linn thing sounds better, when it's been spinning an hour or two.
I've just had a new Dynavector DV 10x5 in my Ittok and it's a superb cartridge for £250.
Have you tried your LP12 with no bottom?

No real break in that I could discern on an old style geddon but a definite warm up phase. It becomes obvious over the course of a listening session but seems to carry on for more than a few hours. When I accidentally left my deck spinning for a couple of days there was surprising improvement. I put it down to the transformer warming up.
If the new one is built the same as the old you can try this without wearing out your TT. Switch the geddon on but disconnect the power lead to the TT. Leave for a suitable period then have a listen.
Regards
Steve

Personally, I MUCH prefer the "ugly buttons" etc on the Olive kit - looks much more business like and modern than 1970s science lab bench power supply-esque pre-Olive stuff - but I digress...
Sorry for thread hijack - couldn't resist that. Now, what about 45 with a 'geddon (ducks!)
