Cables - Uh Oh!

Posted by: andy c on 04 October 2003

Hi,
I was having a bit of fun yesterday expeimenting with interconnects.
The ones being compared were:
Chord Anthem 1m £229.00
Kimber KCAG 1/2 m £230.00 (£378.00 for 1m)
Kinber KCAG 1/2 m attenuated by 10db £230.00 (£378.00 for 1m)
The new Naim supplied with my CDX2.

All the above are din to din - no maywares needed.

The main reason I was having a play was due to the new CD player.
The rest of the system was as per my public profile.

Tracks/CD's used were: Mark knopfler-Sailing to Philadelphia, Zero 7, Massive Attack - Mezzanine, Paul simon, + a few others. Listening panel - me and the missus...lol

Conclusions:
The attenuated KCAG isn't needed now as the CDX2 is more controlling of high frequencys - less tizz and more cleaner and clearer. That cable was dismissed fairly quickly,

Naim's cable - not bad at all, can see why many are happy to accept this cable nad live with it (It was run in BTW) , but,

Normal KCAG - very smooth but revealing. Good on vocals but high freq's seemed recessed compared to the Chord. Bass guitar etc seemed slightly fuzzy for want of a better word. Very musical tho, all usual Naim virtues remained.

Anthem - also very smooth, but detail and bass more controlled. Initially suggested it sounded brighter, but then began to realise it was clarity... The Zero 7 Cd nailed this, but my wife made a valid point that in the context of my system there was not £110+ differance between the Chord and the Kimber...

Just thought you might be interested...

Anyone using any other brands of cable, or have findings to post on this topic I'd be grateful...

Ta!

Reserve final judgement until later. Much later in my opinion.

I have a CDX2 which I agree delivers a much more textured and powerfull signal than lower level CDP's. The key thing is it gets better and better as it "burns in".
I have been running mine for about 6 months now and I reckon I was still hearing subtle improvements even 4 months into use.
I think you will find it worth revisiting the cables in a few months time.
