CD5 ate the CLAMP

Posted by: herm on 29 January 2002

It had to happen. I'm just surprised it happened way before drinks time.

My CD5 swallowed the clamp. So what do I do?

Any advice / previous experience?

Thanks

Mark (and others) suggest storing the puck off the spindle when there's no disc in place:

only place the puck on the "platter" when there's a disk in place.
All other times, leave it on top of the player!

An issue with the older clamps, but not with the new ones- not that I'm aware of.

Yes, I make a point of getting the last disc out at the end of the day and putting the puck back on the spindle - that way the rubbers (oooh) won't gather any dust and they won't flatten under the enormous weight of the puck.

Hi,

If you are fitting screws back into any soft material (plastic aluminium etc) it is best to turn the screws backwards applying slight pressure until you feel and here a click, or the screw drops slightly, this means that the start of the threads are aligned and you can start to screw it in, if you don't get the starts aligned you can start tapping another thread and strip the hole so the screw will not tighten. Before someone showed me this I knackered up lots of things especially plastic pillars with twin threaded screws, now hardly any!!!

...all I meant was that if you only put the puck on the spindle when you're playing a disk, the chances of the puck flying off and getting lost inside the case are practically zilch. Probably a lot less then catching your stylus on a duster during any given week!

Given the cost of the puck, the issue of wearing out the rubbers by storing it "off-spindle" is not IMHO significant, and the puck could stil be stored rubbers-upwards under the front edge of the unit.

I guess I blinked

Well, here's what I did so far. I tried to pry the puck out with various devices in the cocktail stirrer dept. The only thing I achieved was the darn thing rolled out of reach. It's kinda dark in there. (I did spot on old pair of sneakers though I'd lost a while ago.)

One of the differences between CD 3.5 and CD5 is the motherboard is rather delicately suspended. That's why I don't want to flip it over, not even 90 degrees.

So I got a new puck, and arranged for the dealer to open the box friday. Just to make sure I'll have Andy's detailed instructions ready, 'cause I don;t want them to hurt my little baby. I'm not sure, though, whether I'm going to watch as they remove the casing. Yep, I'm that kinda guy.

Thanks again for the input
