New CD5 or used 3.5

Posted by: Emil on 28 May 2002

With the latest rumour about hybrid SACD, Im having second thoughts about buying a new CD5 to go along with my Nait 5. Am I being silly?
A new CD5 goes for $2250 and a used 3.5 for about
$1000. For the money for the CD5, I could purchase
the 3.5 and a new flatcap2 ($900) and wait to see how this SACD thing works out. Im sure Naim has an SACD player on the drawing board.
Any thoughts?

Before I went ahead and bought the cd5, I emailed naim UK asking them whether they would come out with a CDP with SACD capabilities. According to their reply, they said no. Reasons being not enuff demand and little software available. I hope they still stick to that.

I Think the important is if cd 5 is better or no than cd 3.5!Today I speak with my dealer and he told me cd 5 is rather superior to cd 3.5!And he sells Naim,OK?But cd 3.5 has a class A in stereophile magazine!Sony was behind minidisc and this suport was a flop!and it will happen with SACD!CD is in market for the next 5 years at least! So this is no argument, just choose CD 5 big grin
I will buy one too wink And I don´t mind with SACD mad just buy a lot of cd´s make a great colection! big grin

I've been facing a similar dilemma as Emil - do I keep my CD3-5 or sell it and upgrade to a used CDX (with an infusion of $1250 or so extra capital). There is no doubt that the CDX sounds better than the 3-5; however, I wonder if it is a smart thing to do given the perceived state of flux in the digital audio realm (r.e., possible superior formats on the Naim horizon). After a lot of reflection, I've decided to pursue an Aro for my LP12 instead and to properly address digital audio at a later date. Given that I am satisfied with the performance of the CD3-5 and understand that no digital upgrade could match the LP12/Aro (certainly one that I could ever afford), this seems to be a reasonable strategy.

For less money, a CD3.5/Hicap is really better than a CD5!!
And I don't even talk about the design!!(ugly 5 series...)

Hi Tazz,

I used to have CD3.5 bare, then flat-cap, then Hicap, since I didn't want to sell my CD3.5 and flat cap (as I bought all my kits brand new), otherwise I would have gone for CDX with similar price of CD3.5+Hi-cap.

I believe used CD3.5+flat cap is definitely better than CD5 for sound quality in this case, as well as the look IMO!!!!

cheers

Thanks guys for you responses.
What would you say about the improvement to my system as a whole. The flatcap2 can power
the Nait 5 and CD 3.5 together. True? How would this compare to the Nait 5/CD5 without flatcap.
Thanks for your patience.

Mr Quigley
here is a chance to make your sales pitch. assuming its still available
