HD DVD is dead

HD DVD is dead. I guess it's long live Blue Ray.

Oh well, I'm not particularly upset, Blu-Ray is the higher capacity format and thus has more potential as a high quality physical format for both Audio/Visual and (hopefully) good old two channel Audio! My brother might be a bit annoyed though, he just bought the HD-DVD add on for his X-Box 360!!!

Here is Toshiba's announcement of the abandonment of HD-DVD:
http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2008_02/pr1903.htm
"TOKYO--Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders."
Maybe NAIM can get on with development of their Blue-Ray player now.

Grapevine suggests that something "special" will be released at Bristol on Friday.
Possibly their new "blue-ray" dvd machine? (=DVD5 with a Powerline and a Hiline)
Cheers

HD-DVD was never going to succeed once the opposition called their product "Blu-ray"

This is excellent news - I can now get off the fence and take full advantage of my HD ready TV. Anyone got any suggestions for which player to buy (not looking to spend too much money).
I never really understood why they got into this messy format war. They seemed to have learnt their lesson when everyone got together and produced DVD and then they failed to follow the same lines for its replacement. The result has been bad for consumers and for the companies themselves who have surely sold fewer units as a result.
I'm sure Sony's better product name helped, but I suspect the real reason is it achieved a critical mass of studios backing it. Also putting one in every PS3 can't have hurt.

I totally agree. Some of us have no interest in things video. This thread should be moved to its own room.

Anybody think that, in the long term, this just won't matter. Spinning discs will eventually disappear and this particular spat has merely hastened the day!

Why'd they bother at all?
HD downloads are a reality and are only gonna get more popular...
