Nano or Video iPod to replace stolen 20G iPod?

Posted by: NaimDropper on 17 March 2006

Just had my trusty 20G iPod pinched... Broke into my car, wrecked the door but all they took was the iPod.
My first thought was to replace it.
So...
The old one was only about half full, 10-11 GB used. A Nano is possible then.
What about charge capacity?
I was not having any battery trouble with the old one, it would play 10 hours into my car stereo without a problem. Headphones made it last about 4.
I have a few accessories for the 20G size (car charger, cup holder stand, etc. that wouldn't work with the Nano...
I don't care about displaying photos or video, I have enough to do without that stuff.
Any recommendations or experiences?
Thanks!

I have a 30gb ipod, my wife has the 2gb Nano - she doesn't worry about compression and all that - I do. Headphones have been changed from the stock apple ones to sennheiser MX500's - both of us are happy.

Depends on what type of compression you wish to use v quality etc really, doesn't it?

I like to use ACC, it seems to have less artifacts. On tunes where I hear the artifacts I use Apple Lossless. Depends on the source material for sure. Some music lends itself to mp3 style compression better, it seems.
I could get by with 4GB and a lot of swapping around but I do like carrying my entire ripped and compressed (or not) collection with me on trips.
Headphones for me are Sony MDR-7506 at work and Etymotics ER-4 for airplane travel.

Sorry, AAC, not ACC.

Ordered a 30G video iPod from Amazon. Saved me $50 over the Apple direct price since Amazon doesn't charge me tax.
I've read that some folks report the sound is worse than the original, non-video iPod since sound and video share the same connector.
I'll let you know what I think on Tuesday when it arrives.
Anyone experience this?

30G Video iPod arrived last night.
20 or so minutes to load all my songs, piece of cake.
Display quality is amazing, I'm quite chuffed! Downloaded a video just to see how it works and I think I'm hooked. Next business trip will allow me to catch up on some TV. Very cool.
Sound quality is just like the older iPod.
Sounds fine in the car and in my Sony MDR-7506 cans. Have not used the line out into the Naim sistem yet, but the headphone out sounds crappy into the Naim (as the older one did).
Only difference so far is the gap between tracks is WORSE than the older one.
Very annoying, but apparently part of the "package" you get with the iPod.
I've joined a number of tracks where the gap is musically intolerable, may have to do more of that now. Ugh.
But this is a very nice refinement over my 20G iPod.
Highly recommended if you like the iPod thing.
