Constructive criticism thread

Posted by: Nic Peeling on 05 March 2001

The forum seems to me at times to alternate between the extremes of "everthing Naim does is wonderful" and flame mails when someone gets annoyed with something Naim has done. I thought I would start a thread of constructive criticisms. The rules are you can make suggestions to Naim that, if implemented, would address one particular annoyance you have with the company.

My annoyance - The hicap has been around for years and strikes me as too expensive.

My suggestion - rather than drop the price, upgrade the design to give better performance per £/$. Maybe introduce a twin-SNAIC supply below the Supercap, but less than 2*price of hicap to power each channel(e.g. for the 82) separately (or two pieces of kit), but without the sophistication of the Supercap. Maybe modify the hicap so that it could power a headline or some additional piece of kit.

Naim must be getting something right wink

Anyway here's an ergonomic one: -

I'd like a bit more programmability on the 5 series pre-amp (Nait / 112). The amp has a feature to select inputs when a source is activated (i.e. PLAY on CD, 112 selects input 1).

It would be nice if the amp could learn commands from other remotes, so that the same functions could be performed when activating, for example, the TV.

Also currently any source function selects the relevant input on the pre', but I sometimes flick to the TV, whislt the CD is still playing and if there's something I want to watch, pressing STOP on CD then selects input 1 again - seems a bit daft selecting an input to listen to silence confused

Can't criticise the sound though big grin

Am I the only one on this forum who thinks the pre-amps don't have enough inputs?
I currently use two switch boxes to hook everything up at the same time. If you use your Naim for TV sound like I do that means off-air, VCR, Laserdisc/DVD, satellite, and Playstation2(which sounds fantastic). That's five inputs just for video. I occasionally hook up my GameBoy from its headphone out("Monopoly" sounds great). I have a cassette deck for recording car tapes, an open reel for recording live radio shows, an LP-12, FM tuner(which necessitates a separate AM tuner), and CD.

Anyone else have this problem?

Very frustrating... hope the wait is worth it.

I'm certain it will be, my 5 series kit is bloody marvellous.

There are some huge problems within the electronics industry at present with regard to component shortages. Unless you're a major telecomms manufacturer it can be difficult to secure supplies of many semiconductors and passive components.

I'm sure Naim are not immune to this.

I use the Naim for tv too. By using scarts and chaining the equipment in the right order I have off air tv, digital tv, and vcr working into one input on the 72 without the need for any switch boxes, my Karik goes into the cd socket leaving all the others free. You may be able to do something similar.
