I too need some help in a decision. I have three sources and mostly listen to the tuner 50% and then CDP 30% and TT maybe 20% of the time. I bought the fraim on Vuk's advice last year and it was a good move.

system:
cd5, old P3, capian tuner
92r
FC2
150
on a 5 tier fraim (not the P3)

1) I have the opportunity to buy a rarely used CDX for $2500 with tradin on my CD5.
2)wait till more money comes in and buy a 282 with maybe 1 FCII.

Maybe this buying urge is just because I'm frustrated so I'm really on a tightwire with money and spending guilt. I thought waiting and buying the 282 because it would enhance all of my sources by removing what I perceive to be the bottleneck of the 92. But the CDX is only available for a short time, otherwise I have to wait till next year to upgrade my CDP.

any helpful input would be appreciated. Sorry for butting into this thread but I was going to post another just like it. Private discussions are also welcome as I'd like to learn how to use that part of this system.

IMHO, running a 282 with a P3 and CD5 may be not the best thing to do. I would advice to upgrade the source first, and then the preamp.
Last year I upgraded to a 82, keeping the CD3.5. First impressions were a huge improvment, but after a few weeks, all you hear is the shortcoming of the source. I upgraded to a CDS2 5 month later.

my 2 cents

Keano,

The best up-grade you could make is purchasing a second hand CDX. Due to the new range there are plenty on the market at the moment.

You will see quite an improvement over the CD3.5. Once you have upgraded the source then its time to look at the amplification.

My dealer has the CDX for sale and said it was only used for a few weeks before the guy had to give it up, so basically it's brand new. If it is that expensive I think I'd rather have a CDXII. If my trade in is about $1500 then that would be about $3450 for the II model. Hmmm we're going over the limit again. This is just what happened when i first bought my stuff, I went way over budget. But I know, source first should be the rule. There only seems to be about a $900 dollar difference from getting the II model and I think i'd rather have that.

thanks JM and MR for your feedback.

I had the same type of setup two years ago... and after asking advices from the Forum and my favorite dealer, I decided to go in the following order:

- 1st step: Source (CDX + XPS); very good deals on 2nd hand market
- 2nd step: Preamp 82, 52 or new technology
- 3rd step: Supercap
- 4th step: Amp

Take time to appreciate each step before going to the next one. That's part of the pleasure..

Have fun !

My best friend who gets to hear my system irregularly questioned why I would want to upgrade. He thinks that I would be getting myself into a pickel because it would reveal more detail and possible flaws. As it is now I have great sound with that nice blur of sound with little details in it. sometimes more detail is not the best answer. Think of only being able to see a painting close up was his comment.

From what I gather the 82 upgrade reveals more about the sources and creates a larger soundstage, am I right? And the CDX would just add more detail to the instruments. Comments please from those that have upgraded.

Also, by not buying I would have this money in my bank account incase I stumble on a good deal to buy a house. and in these criticle days I really should consider. and 2-5 grand could be a make or break on a realestate deal. but then if I got the house I coud put in a new mains for the stereo. Yippee, biggest upgrade of all.
