..a recent acquirement of mine.
Approximately how many listens does it take before it stops being irritating?

Have a bottle of wine (or 2), turn down the lights and then play.

Irritating ? - Interesting way to describe arguably the most popular jazz album of all time...!
Keep drinking Lontano's wine....!

The irony of someone named (whether by birth or appropriation) "Dave Brubeck" finding Kind Of Blue "irritating" is downright flabbergasting.

That's a brave post.
Try Miles' Bitches Brew.
You'll love it.

That initial post was quite mental! If you don't love the music on the album on first hearing, no further passes will change things.
But "irritating" is ridiculous!
So we must assume that 'trolling' is on the go here.

I love Kind Of Blue and Bitches Brew ... not at all mutually exclusive!

Oh, I dunno about that ... I think it's entirely possible for music to grow on someone after initial disappointment. It's happened to me more than once!
And I'm not convinced he's trolling for an argument ... I'm willing to take his post at face value. Although I would like to know what "Dave Brubeck" finds irritating about Kind Of Blue, and to give an example of something he likes in comparison.

Well, it is an interesting post. I like the record a lot. I am listening to it as we speak. "Irritating"? - not to me.

First time I've ever heard 'Kind Of Blue' referred to as irritating
Posted on: 20 May 2010 by Rockingdoc
This is a wind up? A Brubeck fan has just heard "Kind of Blue" for the first time. Yeah, right.
Did you know that "Kind of Blue" is now on the music A-Level syllabus. I wish I was back at school.

Do you think there is more than one Dave Brubeck in this world?

Why is there an accusation of trolling. Is it because some one has the gall to NOT like Jazz and say so?
Most of what I've heard of MD just as Dave says "irritates" to put it mildly, Kind of Blue is his best , but that's not saying much for me.
I like some jazz, but have the lead instrument be a Sax or trumpet, it usually ends in tears for me.
Maybe I prefer piano and guitar based jazz as it seems the participants cannot send the instruments into that shrieking, squeaking, dissonance they seem to think is the epitome of a solo.
It is possible with guitar and there are plenty of examples of non jazz exponents going 'a bit too far'.
It may be one of life's ironies that a guy (if it's his real name) being christened Dave Brubeck doesn't like jazz, or may be that bigger "sin" not liking Miles Davis?

It may not be a question of not liking jazz though.
I love the Miles Davis fusion stuff, starting with In A Silent Way, and like Sketches Of Spain but I bought Kind Of Blue because of seemingly universal admiration and it leaves me stone cold. I cannot relate to the sound world at all.

That's funny.....coming from 'Dave Brubeck'!

PS - 25 years ago I shared a flat with my (still) best-mate and the first few times I played KOB he wanted to throw the hi-fi out the window.......but after a few weeks he'd ask 'Go and put 'that' record on again' ....It takes a while but lasts forever.

I really would like to add further comment... but I think it would spoil the thread!

Fred,
I was being a little cheeky with that post, but there is subjective truth in my words. I personally bought Kind Of Blue as an entry into Jazz and Miles Davis after reading here and other music fora but have grown to think of it as an historically important document of Jazz but musically quite bland, when I reach for Jazz its much more modern and when I reach for Miles Davis its Bitches Brew, On The Corner, Arghata era Miles Davis, so I can definitely see Kind Of Blue being irritating.

Miles Davis for me, is one of those talents that at some point in your life....you just get.
Mark, my words it will happen.

What I find most interesting about "Dave Brubeck's: post, is that many jazz musicians, probably Miles too, felt Brubeck couldn't swing at all and was a hugely overrated jazz musician..hehehe

But that was my exact point in the quote you included above ... someone else wondered if he was trolling; I didn't agree ... I took him sincerely.
