..a recent acquirement of mine.
Approximately how many listens does it take before it stops being irritating?

Try Miles' Bitches Brew.
You'll love it.
Now thats proper Miles Davis to me.![]()
I love Kind Of Blue and Bitches Brew ... not at all mutually exclusive!
Fred,
I was being a little cheeky with that post, but there is subjective truth in my words. I personally bought Kind Of Blue as an entry into Jazz and Miles Davis after reading here and other music fora but have grown to think of it as an historically important document of Jazz but musically quite bland, when I reach for Jazz its much more modern and when I reach for Miles Davis its Bitches Brew, On The Corner, Arghata era Miles Davis, so I can definitely see Kind Of Blue being irritating.
Hi, Dean ... I have no problem with anyone liking/not liking Kind Of Blue or Bitches Brew. Now, if someone were to extrapolate from their dislike of one or the other that they were not excellent realizations of their respective artistic intents, I'd have a serious problem with that, but that's a different discussion ... we're talking strictly personal taste here, and, as you have properly noted, you acknowledge the historical importance of Kind Of Blue despite it leaving you cold, and that's all anyone could ever ask of another.
I would point out the apparent contradiction of music that you find "bland" also being "irritating" ... semantically speaking, something that's bland has little chance of irritating. And, even though I don't find this to be the case at all, I could much more easily see how someone who likes Kind Of Blue would find Bitches Brew irritating than the other way around.
However, not to convince you that you should like Kind Of Blue, but to offer insight into why many do not find it bland, I would say that what seems bland to you is subtle, ethereal, dream-like, gentle, and poetic to others ... very much like the Japanese art of water-colors that pianist Bill Evans refers to in his original liner notes (which, for anyone wanting a deeper appreciation of the album, and of the art of improvisation in general, would do well to read). It's very much about understatement and suggestion.
I will say this: an artist who can make two masterpieces as seemingly disparate as Kind Of Blue and Bitches Brew is certainly some kind of genius.
All best,
Fred

'Kind of Blue' is a fantastic album and I learnt a lot about jazz improvisation from it. However, it is not my favourite Miles Davis album. For me, the no 1 album is 'Round About Midnight', especially the 'Legacy' edition.

Would that explain why I only have one Brubeck album in my collection, but I have all of Fred Simon's works on the Naim label ... ?

To be fair to Brubeck How many other jazz pianists do you know who can play with their elbows?

Although 'Time Out' is the only Brubeck album that I currently truly enjoy listening to, it is a fantastic album. Is the 'Legacy Edition' CD worth the extra few quid? There are also 180 grm and 200 grm versions of vinyl. Can anyone comment on how good is the quality of the recording on both vinyl formats?

Hi Fred,
I think you slightly misunderstood my post I was not saying I find it irritating but could understand others finding it so, my bland is another's irritating, you see what I mean? and I did not also say I did not like the album just that it is a bit on bland side for my tastes so I don't put it at the top of my "most liked" music list as I would later Miles Davis' work, but I must say that I have come to that conclusion about allot of 50's/60's Jazz it just doesn't float my boat in ways that it does others, one thing I am glad though is that listening to some John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Ben Brewster lead me to Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, Improv Jazz and that is more to my taste. I'm not putting others opinion and tastes down I'm just offering mine up for the benefit of the debate as some seem flabbergasted

I'm glad I'm not. I'm afraid I just don't get it. I'm not saying it's bad, but it certainly is not for me.
Regards,
Steve.

I have nothing more to add.

Hi Dean,
Just to be totally clear ... as I said, it was the irony of someone named "Dave Brubeck" not liking Kind Of Blue that flabbergasted me. I have no problem with people not liking it in general.
Best,

I was loaned Kind of Blue [and a couple of other Davis recordings], listened and have not bought a copy. No intention of borrowing it again either. Had it six months and accept that the legend is true, and I am wrong.

That's how I feel about the Beatles and Beethoven.

Fred,
I understood that but flabbergast is a great word and I used it in a general context than specifically targeting you. Its in there with Gobbledegook, Poppycock, Balderdash buts thats for another thread entirely.

Played KOB again yesterday to hear if I was correct in my thoughts and the only really standout track for me is Flemenco Sketches, the others are TO ME slighty bland, but I do really like Sketches of Spain so thats a given.
