Unitiqute and aerials
Posted by: El Guapo on 22 January 2010
Just wondered does the unitiqute have separate connections for DAB and FM aerials? Looking at the photos of the back I can't see separate inputs but that doesn't mean that there isn't. Otherwise if there is only one input presumabley that would mean I would have to use an aerial splitter which would be inconvenient and I would assume detrimental to the signal quality

My n-Vi used one antenna for both DAB and FM. I used an FM one (not optimum due to difference in frequency and polarisation) but given the DAB / FM module isn't really that good and the DAB signal on the BBC channels was 100% i didnt worry. Decide which is more important to you and fit the antenna most appropriate. Both ways will give you a usaable signal.

I see your point. But I would rather have something better than a usable signal. There are DAB/FM tuners that have separate inputs, like the Linn, Arcam and Denon. I've also been told that the Uniti has separate inputs.
I have prioblems with the DAB input on my Pure with some stations - non-BBC - so I would prefer to optimise the input if I can. Even if it isn't really that good I would like to make the most of it.

The Unitithing must have a splitter inside
But you will (might) need another splitter at the aerial end unless ....
If you are in a strong signal area. Find out what polarisation your FM transmitter is.
If its "Mixed" (sometimes called circular) you need to re-orientate your FM aerial to vertical, that will pick up FM with the dipole still in resonance & it will also do a very reasonable job of pulling in DAB which is only vertically polarised. But be careful using the one aerial option as if tempted to use only a DAB aerial it does a real bad job of pulling in FM.
If your transmitter polarisation is only horizontal, you need to add a verticaly orientated DAB aerial fitted to the FM aerial with a splitter - I can't find a purpose built FM/DAB splitter & I don't think one is available. But you do need to decouple the aerials with an inductive splitter. see attached link.
If you are in a weak area.
Hard luck - forget DAB, its crap anyway.

I have a RS Galaxy circular & it does DAB well - its still crap tho' - & I since sold the FM/DAB radio

The Uniti has only a single aerial input.
I use mine with whatever combination TV/FM roof aerial the previous house owners installed back in the 80's and get great reception for both FM and DAB. Worth trying this with your setup before assuming that you need do anything with your roof aerial.
The only thing I had to fix was the TV/FM faceplate in the living room as this was filtering out the DAB frequencies. A quick swap out of a £5 DAB friendly one and all has worked wonderfully since.

A dealer told me it has 2. Just shows you can't trust anyone

They are listed under Combiners - most are 3 way - FM DAB UHF (TV) but you can find just 2 ways. I'd try a DAB dipole in the loft to start with - if FM performance is poor then add a 3 ele (depending on your location) and use a combiner to allow a single feed to the Uniti - its only a single input as its a combined FM/DAB module (and i suspect a straight software receiver inside)
One External aerial connection on both (apart from Wi-fi antenna)
