Brakit? Stuff it!

Posted by: Erik (DK) on 27 September 2002

A few days back I decided to arrange for my Kans to hang on the wall. I had done some searching on the forum about wall mounts, and it seemed to be an ok idea. Especially as I don’t have the original Linn stands anyway and as my current stands rest on carpet making them a little unstable (I’m not quite sure I’d cut holes in the carpet to solve this problem). The only wall mount available where I live (Aarhus, Denmark) is the Linn Brakit. I did a search on it and was surprised that only a few people had mentioned it on the forum, it being the original Linn solution and all. I decided to go with the Brakit and was very careful about the installation (On a very solid concrete wall). But they turned out to kill the music in some sense. This morning I placed them on the stands again and the magic was back. Well it’s not an ideal setup but it’s playing music again. I cannot recommend the Brakit if placing on stands is an alternative.
Anyway: Can somebody tell me what make my stands might be from this description? They look a lot like new Sound Organisations but with square tubes (the width equals the depth) They’re quite heavy (not filled with lead shot). Could it be an old Sound Org model? Perhaps the model some people refer to as the cheaper alternative to the original Kan stand? Would it under any circumstances (whatever the make of my current stands) be a lot better with the Kan II stand?

Any help will be Appreciated

IME Kans need to be supported without flop and wobble. It's definitely worth spiking your stands through the carpet. This doesn't cause significant damage.

It that loses the magic then you have a problem elsewhere...

Erik,

The Brakits were designed to be used with the Tukans and later Kan III. I imagine that Linn would recommend them for use with original Kans and Kan 2s but they appear to be krap compared with the likes of the flat earth approved Sound Organisation Small Speaker Wall Stand and the Audiotech equivalent (which Ron the Mon reports to be superior).

I don't believe that either of these are still in production.

BTW, small X pattern cuts in the carpet are never visible as you are cutting the backing and underpad only not necessarily (if carefull) the pile. I have hundreds of them in my living room.

The difference between 'close but slightly wobbly' and 'solid as a rock' is like night and day.
