SL2 Setup - Tweeter Alignment
Posted by: Rui Marques on 12 August 2009
Hi SL2 Owners,
I hope that all of you have the tweeters aligned with the front panel of the speakers.
My SL2s bought second hand, were (badly) installed by me. The tweeters were 2 mm to the front (at least they were not touching the cabinets).
I read here about the SL2 setup ... it was necessary to adjust the "bolts" in the rear part of the tweeter.
It is now clear to me why these speakers have so many "bad opinions". They are an incredible and precise MUSIC MACHINE but it is soooo easy to mess up with instalation/setup/placement, etc.
The bass, scale, and sense of performance is now truly beyond the physical size of the speakers. How can it be that this 2mmm make so much difference!!!!
Thanks to this forum i was able to get it right.
Thank you!
Rui

151, just curious but did you fire your SL2s down the long axis of the room?
I only ask because I've fairly recently placed my speakers (not SL2s, but they are Naim!) with their backs to the long wall and firing across the room. The speakers are now nowhere near the corners. Obviously you end up sitting a lot closer and I have a thick rug on the wall behind my head. Works for me

Did you ever try it?
Best, Chris

hi chris, tried them both ways across the room was far better for me also found toeing them in slightly made for a better sound stage.

munch,
you were right, the spikes were not low enough.
but with SL2 nothing is simple. now the spikes are ok but i had to change the placement again - 3mmm closer to the wall. now i have 10; 10,4 (4mmm toe in).
more grip and bass than before.
thanks a lot

ive had my SL2s for a month now and feel confident to post a few tips that i have picked up along the way which i would like to pass on.
1, when lining up tweeters try cutting some small lengths of cardboard approx 1-2mm thick and around 1" long x 1/2" wide slip them into the round gap around tweeters (make sure they are spaced equally around tweeter) with enough showing to be able to pull them out again when tightened. proceed to tighten everything including top fish plates tightly - remove cardboard and there should be a nice even gap all around tweeters and they should rock gently without fouling cabinet when pushed in.
2, make sure the rear main tubular frame bottom bolts are as tight as you can possibly get them (i put on a pair of riggers gloves to enable me to get more grip without hurting my hand on allen key).
3, as munch said get the units as low down on the spikes as possible and tighten.
4, set the base unit upright and level there should be no movement whatsoever.
5, experiment with positioning and toe in (but dont overdo this - just an inch or so should suffice.
finally try not to disturb them so be careful if you have kids or animals and then sit back and enjoy.
ATB - Scotty.

have you got the latest spec bolts for main tubular frame bottom far easier to get tight, and torque all bolts including the two that secure the spiked base to cabinet and the tweeter bolts the others have already been pointed out,you can also check the main tubular frame is square one of the ones i had was quite a bit out it can be adjusted where the label on back joining the two main frame uprights if this isn't properly square its not possible to get the tweeters square without throwing other parts out of line, happy listening

other think that's wrong with mine are the PIPs.
i have to order new ones as they have almost no height. probably also order the latest spec bolts.
SL2s fantastic to listen but so difficult to setup
