SL2 Setup
Posted by: audiogoose on 10 July 2003
I have my SL2's sounding very nice, but I wonder if the setup can be improved by getting the tweeter exactly centered in the cutout. I have them very close but not quite perfect. The angle of the tweeter in the baffle is also very slightly (only a degree or two) down-firing.
Should I keep fiddling with the tweeter position to try to improve it? The edges of the tweeters do not touch the baffle of the upper box at any point.
I would appreciate any feedback from other SL2 owners or Naim itself.
Thanks in advance.

There is plenty of scope for adjustment with the SL2s but my advice woul be to get as close as you can to perfectly centering the tweeter (and centering the tweeeter surround plate) and getting it flush with the surround plate. Then try the top-box tap test. The tweeter should seems to move backwards and forwards a couple of times. If there is any lateral movement side to side then this is a clear indication that adjustment needs to be made at the base or the spikes are adjusted incorrectly.

Richard--
For the life of me, I can't budge the "tweeter surround plate" on my SL2's, even after removing the bolts entirely. Are these adjustable on all SL2's? Any information would be appreciated.

Don't touch the front screws of the tweeter. To adjust the surround plate, unscrew at the rear of the tweeter (horizontal plate) where it is fixed to the "arm". BUT be sure everything is ok before adjusting that, it is adjusted at the factory and rarely need to be corrected.

Arthur,
this is the large black plate on the top enclosure which has the aperture for the tweeter. Slacken off the four large bolts - you may find that some force is required to "unstick" the plate from the cabinet but once done it should move freely a few mm's each way. Once re-aligned just tighten up the bolts again.

Arthur,
before unstick the plate from the cabinet I have removed the Upper Cabinet.
