New Glasses

Dear Friends,

Six months overdue, I had an eye test this afternoon. After about two years of being attacked by the disease, Central Serous Retinopathy, I was signed off by the hospital consultant nine months ago.

I really thought my eyes were going downhill fast, but with correction they have apparently got more vision than last time, which was in the middle of my CSR attack. In fact my optician described them as exquisite! [A pair of photos showed the nicely healed damage where the Retina had lifted in both eyes]. Does he fancy me do you think? My dentist, in younger days, used to call me gorgeous George for reasons that Fredrik is my second Christian name, and we got on as good friends, and I was not frightened of him as most kids are of the dentist - it persisted! It seems a shame that such innoscense does not much exist nowadays. Mind I had been going to him for twenty years when he retired nearly fifteen years ago, so all my life really... He was a farmer's son, and a very bright man. We used to discuss such arcane suggest mono-zygous ryegrass breading and so forth, so I used to look forward to have my teeth examinied! I have forgotten almost everything I used to know about plant breading, which is sad. We used to grow herbage seed for the NASDA at Cambridge, and I planted the very last field of S 184 Wild White Clover of pre-basic stock to be grown in the UK, back in 1978! More irrelevant rubbish from this quarter I suppose!

But arn't glasses a price! Jeez, I think I had better get and ask for a pay rise!

I had an eye test the other day. The last time I had a test was 18 months ago in India, so I ordered some new lenses there. My wife and I got 3 pairs of new lenses for less than 100 quid! The downside is that their tests weren't exactly exhuastive - they're the sort of tests you would have had in England about 30 years ago! Still, the lenses have lasted me, but it was time for another test.

Glasses are very expensive in this country, but I must say that I was very surprised at how much the bendy-type glasses have gone down in price! About 6 years ago (when the technology was new) I think I paid nearly £600, but now I've got 2 pairs (buy 1, get 1 free at SpecSavers) for £250. So I'm not complaining too much!

Dear Mark,

I have a view that it hardly matters if all my teeth went, as I could still chew with plastic ones, but no plastic eyes exist, so I am content that the money it costs to get good spectacles and eye tests is priceless.

It was my optician who wrote my GP a letter, which I had to take to the duty doctor in my surgery, which saw me in the Hospital less than four hours after the initial eye test about three and a half years ago, before the CSR was diagnosed and not something potentially much more life threatening.

For all that I find his services expensive, there is no doubt that I have the greatest respect for my wonderful otpician, as well as the splendid consulants working in the NHS.
