Cater-field Nuts - Engine Question

Posted by: Hammerhead on 05 March 2006

Just been talking about Caterhams & Westfields with a few friends recently and one thing that I noted with some cars out there is the mix of modern engines with ECUs being feb by a pair of carbs (Ford 2.0 Zetec/Twin 45 Webber Carbs being an example).

What is the reason behind using carbs when FI is more efficient/reliable? Is it just something else you can tinker with out in the garage ( Winker )or is it that carbs just sound better?

Answers on a oily piece of scrap paper if you please!

Cheers,

Steve

The standard engine choices for Caterham recently have all been fuel injection. I've never been too bothered about tuning mine but I was not aware of anyone using carbs with the K series, or Vauxall 16V used before. Caterham have never fitted the 2.0 Zetec although the 2.3 Duratec has been used for a bit and is now in the CSR (with injection).

I think you need to ask about this on the Westfield site, or perhaps search the Lotus Seven site Blatchat.co.uk (although you may only post if a member). A number of Blatchat members run Westfields and other 'sevenalikes'. The Pistonheads website may be another one to try.

Carbs are cheaper than a full throttle body setup and give more power than the standard injection setups used on most production cars.

how distressing to find a 7-related topic, the answer to which I am completely unable to provide!

At least I can say hello!
