Copy Protected CDs and Naim CD Players
Posted by: Adrian Pasciuta on 13 March 2003
There is a thread in the Music Corner on Massive Attack's latest CD, 100th Window. Most of the discussion relates to the fact that this disc is copy protected.
I got a copy of 100th Window through CD Wow and like most of their discs it was a Far East pressing, coming from Hong Kong.
It is hard to miss the very annoying drop-out after 10 seconds into each track when playing this CD on a Naim CDX. At first I put it down to a bad pressing but then it became apparent that it is a problem with the copy protection system.
I contacted Naim yesterday who were really helpful in explaining the situation. It is a known problem and Naim are working on new software that solves the problem for all current copy protection systems. The upgrade will mean replacing the control software chip in the player. A kit will be made available directly to customers and through dealers. Pricing for the kit was said to be in the region of £30.
The problem affects all players after the CD3 (CD3.5, CDX, CDS2). Even early versions of the CDX2 have the problem and will need to be updated, although I was told this would be done free of charge.
My dealer didn't know anything about this, but apparently Naim are gearing up to provide the kits and associated literature which will be available in the next 10 days to two weeks.
I think 100th Window is the only copy protected disc I have. There is a label (in very small print!) on the back that says the disc is copy protected but no responsibility is taken for return, refund or exchange if the disc causes problems. This is bollox (excuse me, Mr. Moderator). I have emailed EMI Records asking for a replacement disc without copy protection. I urge anybody else in the same situation to do the same.
