Transferring music from iPod to PC
Posted by: Bruce Woodhouse on 28 May 2007
I want to get my music library on to another PC using my iPod. I've discovered a few utilities that seem to do this (Ephpod, ipodrip, ipod access), can anyone recommend one that has worked for them?

Copied unashamedly from another forum...........
For Windows:
1) connect iPod and hold Shift + Ctrl - this stops the auto sync
2) If your iPod doesn't appear in 'My Computer' then enable disk use for the iPod
3) Go to 'My Computer' and Double-click your iPod to open it
4) From the menu bar go to Tools > Folder Options…
5) Select the 'View' tab
6) scroll down and enable 'Show Hidden Files and Folders'
7) hit 'Apply' or 'OK'
8) Double-click on 'iPod_Control', then 'Music'
9) Copy the contents (Folders named F01, F02, etc.) to your HDD
10) open iTunes preferences and under the advanced pane, make sure that 'Keep iTunes Music folder organized' and, 'Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library' are checked. The first option will fix up the filenames so that they appear normal, the second makes sure that the songs are somewhere safe that iTunes knows about.
11) Drag the Folders into the iTunes window to import your music
For Mac:
1) connect iPod and hold Command + Option - this stops the auto sync.
2) then enable disk use for the iPod
3) open terminal (Applications > Utlities) and type:
cp -R '/Volumes/<Your iPod's Name>/iPod_Control/Music/' '/Users/<Your user name>/Desktop/iPod Music'
Note: if your iPod's name contains an apostrophe (') then do not include the first set of quotation marks (from /Volumes…to…Control/Music/), follow the command but place a \ key directly before any spaces or apostrophes, eg: cp -R /Volumes/Joe\ Blogg\'s\ iPod/iPod_Control/Music '/Users/Joe/Desktop/iPod Music'
4) hit return
5) Sit back as the contents of your iPod's Library are copied into a folder called 'iPod Music' on your desktop
6) open iTunes preferences and under the advanced pane, make sure that 'Keep iTunes Music folder organized' and, 'Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library' are checked. Splendid-thanks.
I assumed it could be done by enabling disk use but nice to see it written out in idiot-proof style.

Thanks
igagdget looks interesting for a few additional gizmos, although I've managed to do my file transfer without problems following the advice given.
