The beauty of black...

Posted by: Flame on 15 November 2007

Hi guys;

It is just past midnight here and I just left my listening room. Been sitting in dim lights listening to Diana Krall's "how insensitive" and I couldn't get my eyes to stop staring at my kit. The naim kit is a cd5i and nait 5i sitting on a piano black rack. Display illumination was turned off and the only light coming from the kit was the beautiful neon green of the naim logo. I don't think that there are any pieces of audio gear that look better than this. The simplicity and elegance of the design is just so sexy... The black color appearing so refined and mature... Although we focus most on listening to our equipment, with Naim, looking is just as pleasurable...

If you like black equipment, these boxes do look elegant.
I first seen them in a review in HI-FI+ magazine (which is a gorgeous looking magazine)
about seven years ago and I thought the pictures were stunning. Little did I know I was going to buy a rack full of thoses boxes a few years later.

The boxes do a great job. But I don't think this level of attachment is healthy!

I think Droodzilla's caressing is a joke, I hope. Big Grin

Since we are on a confession path, I touch my kit too. Slowly caressing the cases and feeling the friction between the grainy metal and my fingertips. I then pass my finger across the input selection buttons and enjoy their firm yet rubbery feel. The touching session ends with a circular motion around the volume knob and then an intimate palm to case prolonged contact session to try and feel the heat in the amp. Sadly (fortunately) it never gets warm...

(lool, sorry Adam for any erotic theme which MIGHT be picked up above ) :P

Try being rough. Caressing can only get so much out. Twist the knobs quickly and aggressively, all the way, until it screams. Even then,a sweet song...

I can't figure out why some people still prefer the look of the old olive stuff over the new black stuff......

Enjoy your music,

Scotty that is cruelty. A good dealer lends you a replacement. Big Grin

I'm too beautiful in dim light... the good thing is to be beautiful in full light..

I think that the new look (not so new now) of the Naim gear is impressive and clean, but still the look of the olive style is much more classic and simple. If there were a choice between the two looks I would choose the olive style. As I said before, maybe I’m thinking so because I can’t afford 282/200 instead of my 82/180. Maybe.

Whilst not wishing to condone his actions I can't help but wonder how this becomes a legal matter given that he was doing it in the privacy of his locked bedroom.

Indeed. Seems that strenous efforts were made to clean his room at that time.

In most hotels a "do not disturb" sign or a shout of "later" usually does the trick. Obviously "riding your bike" doesn't mean the same thing everywhere.

I've now found the 'illuminated' piccy I was after.

The new lit logo is very smart, being the r/c sensor too, but for me there's nothing quite like the old logo green-lit in the evening/dark. So cool; so so cool... A real design classic.

Both the old and new logos are pretty good designs - what spoils the olive gear's looks for me are the selector buttons, they look rather dated to my eyes.

Zaphod has the right idea..

Zaphod's attention however was elsewhere. His attention was riveted on the ship standing next to Hotblack Desiato's limo. His mouths hung open.

"That," he said, "that ... is really bad for the eyes ..."

Ford looked. He too stood astonished.

It was a ship of classic, simple design, like a flattened salmon, twenty yards long, very clean, very sleek. There was just one remarkable thing about it.

"It's so ... black!" said Ford Prefect, "you can hardly make out its shape ... light just seems to fall into it!"

Zaphod said nothing. He had simply fallen in love.

I don't necessarily disagree with you Ian !

The things I particularly like about the look of olive include:

(1) the colour itself, understated olive, found nowhere else - not the standard audio industry black or silver

(2) the illuminated logo, we've already mentioned;

(3) the slight paradox that at one and the same time, the olive gear looks both English Cottage Industry (kinda classic Britsh sportscar), and very purposeful and technical.

Of the new range, I really like the button and knobs (and lack of knobs on the power supplies and power amps). But I'm afraid I'm not a great lover of black (or silver) - even the 500 series finish is still an industry standard colour. And, to be absolutely candid, I'm not really the greatest fan of the new illuminated logo - for me, with the black, it's all a bit 'Ford dashboard at night'. However, as I said above, I do think it's clever the way it incorporates the r/c sensor.
